Guard Location

Greetings XY forum and Happy Christmas, 8)

Image

My situation is that on very few occasions I will select a few image files in a folder directory of mine within XYplorer and then switch over to another program window of a different application only then to return to XYplorer and press the Del key (Delete) the selected files only to find that a Windows confirm prompt shows up asking me if I'm sure I want to delete the WHOLE FOLDER

This does not feel like a bug but actually feels like I am missing something (perhaps a feature within XYplorer that I must disable). Or perhaps Xyplorer (upon returning to the app) automatically switches focus-selection onto the tab and not onto any selected files?

I must stress, at one point in haste, I did go ahead and accidentally delete a whole folder only to quickly open up the Windows Recycle Bin to recover that important critical folder

Please advise

Because you use Alt-Tab to switch between windows and somehow you mis-handle the keyboard and press "Tab" in the XY window, thus the focus goes to folder in Tree instead of files in List.
Watch your fingers!
P.S: You can F9 > Colors > change color of List (Focused item) to make it more visible whether the List lose focus

Hi again,

I don't think this is the case as I'm certain I'm just pressing Delete 'Del' key while using my cursor

Anyways it would be nice if XYplorer had a new critical feature that would be able to 'Lock' or 'Guard' a folder directory through tabs to prevent this nasty accidental thing from happening.

some really critical folder directories such as Desktop, My Documents and Program Files - when working with them in XY tabs. I have these tabs already set to 'Lock location' but this useful setting only locks the tab only.

So a right-click tab setting named something like 'Guard this location' would be very nice :)

Instead of futher cluttering up the context menu, I could see this being initially done via something simple like List Management or INI because i don't see the folders that a user wanting to guard changing except rarely...

Hello Mr Hallgren,

Yes an INI edit would be a good start but I am very UI-centric software user 8)

The Tools>List Management sounds nicer. I also like the inclusion of the naming 'Guard' - so a 'Guard Directory' or 'Guard Location'

I hope Don could agree

Could this topic be moved to the feature requests forum?

I'm interested to read Don's responses on this issue too :)

Done, and called it "Guard Location".

Note that this (pretty much this) can be done already using Admin Settings. Please check Help...

Don I thank you tremendously once again for your kind support :) :)

However I cannot find the feature in BETA v13.60.0010 - 2014-01-13 ??

Furthermore it would be ever so nice if this feature could ALSO be accessible via right-clicking on a tab - but hold your horses right-there on this once as I have understood Mr Hallgren's restraint on further adding more menu items to the tab's right-click, therefore....

....I think there should be a nice convenient tickbox option in the Configuration>Tabs which should be named 'Locking the location also guards it' or similarly named 'Guard the location after locking' 8) (I'm thoughtful)

see below mock-up screenshot:

So that Guarding would protect the directory/folder from any form of Deletion, Moving and Renaming (within XYplorer only of course)

For Guarded Locations = A prompt message could display on an attempt which would tell the user that it is guarded and where they need to go to to un-guard it (the prompt dialog should not allow instant removal of the Guard depending on if the Guard feature is to be integrated into the Customize>List Management)

Agree Don?

Currently other things are on my list, but I'm not totally against the "guard location" idea. I needs more thinking...

Ok Don, more time to consider it, that is understandable.

I have fingers crossed that if you do implement it that you would do it as a tickbox for Configuration>Tabs ---> 'Guard the location after locking'

Fingers crossed before v14.0

I don't think all would require tabsto be guarded after locking.

I do lock tabs with my most used folders and deletions are frequent among them. IMO, entry in Right click Tab Context Menu may be a better place.

A location is a location. I don't even think it should be connected to tabs.

Locking of tabs is exactly what it is (ust the tabs get locked) meaning it does NOT lock the actual directory (folder) itself for preventing changes to happen to it - because even Locked tabs can still be navigation-able to any folder directories if the user chooses to whilst in a tab-locked state.

The config setting I proposed in that screenshot I posted would simply Guard the folder location during whilst locking of the tab (2 in 1). But like I just mentioned, Guarding should not get confused with Tab Locking so the config setting idea I don't support anymore.

admin wrote:A location is a location. I don't even think it should be connected to tabs.
Agreed, true, since there is the folder Tree to consider as an accessing route plus other route's if I'm not mistaken.

In addition to this response a separate GUI window might be required in order to manage (add/remove) a user's list of Guarded Locations. Furthermore this idealized GUI window "Guard Locations" could even have tickboxes for different rights such as:
[] RENAME FOLDER [] MOVE FOLDER [] DELETE FOLDER TO RECYCLE []ALLOW PASTING OF FILES INTO FOLDER etc etc similar to Windows

The GUI window for this would closely resemble the "Recent Locations" gui window.

Furthermore I still like the accessibility idea of using Guarding feature through tabs, even just as a secondary method of accessing the feature - another example. Ctrl+left click on a tab could be a hotkey used on tab(s) to mark on/off the tab's directory location as 'Guarded'. Not the tab itself but it's folder directory.

Lastly another secondary method of using it through tabs would be that same aforementioned right-click Tab menu entry but this time better named as 'Add this directory to Guarded locations' IMO

So in my updated summary, I now support the following implementation methods for this:
1.) GUI window for Guard Locations ---> accessible from 'tools' or 'go' menu bar
2.) A right-click tab entry named 'Add this to Guarded locations' ---> which would open up the GUI window to action it
3.) A tab that stumbles upon/uses a Guarded Location could let the user know by having a color highlight or special icon displayed on the tab

--------------------
I agree with Don, it's a good idea to look towards having a Guard Locations feature but it requires careful thought. Still would be good to see this anytime before v14.0

Any news on this Don? Before v14 maybe??

If you believe it should not be connected to tabs (I respect your judgment), then where would be a fitting location to place this feature?

You are aware that there might be a few other things on my mind besides Guard Location... ? ;)
