Auto-select

Code: Select all

    - Removed the "auto-select the most recently used subfolder"
feature introduced in v5.10.0035. Reason: The new breadcrumb is
far more handy and powerful, and the automatic selection of items
is rather non-expected behavior to my taste
Allright, so some time ago you removed that auto-select the MRU subfolder, and you obviously has your reasons for doing so (they're stated above! ;))

But turns out I think it was really nice/helpfull on some occasions, and yeah I know about Breadcrumb but I don't use it (hey it's not in my List ctxt menu! ;)), plus what I really liked is not so much to be able to go back by pressing Enter, but to have the folder selected, so I could easilly see what's around and go in the next/previous one.

See, I have this folder with many subfolders, and I wanna go into them one by one, so if after "Up" the folder I was in is selected, I can easilly move to the next one. Something that isn't doable through Breadcrumb obviously (yes, for this Breadcrumb isn't more powerfull ;)).
And I know there's a Tree :P but Tree is always sorted alphabetically, while List can be sorted differently, and have VF activated aswell!

Now, I am not gonna ask you to just put it back, I remember your taste ;), but I'd like it if on "Up" the folder we were in could get the focus (instead of the first item on List).
Since it's only the focus, the List is shown as now, there's no selection nor auto-scroll or anything (just focus, don't put it into view) so it's pretty much like now. And clicking an item or pressing Home & no one even knew it had focus ;) but, I could then dbl-click (or use the arrow keys) and get it into view, which I'd like very much :D

I, too, really liked it while it lasted -- and while I could live with it before now really miss it! It saved me a lot of keystrokes when keyboard operating. If I'm going through a list of folders, as illustrated in the initial post in this thread, I didn't have to navigate past the ones already done to get to the next one (or for that matter remember which was the last to determine the next). Worked out marvelously.

While I -do- use the breadcrumbs, and quite like it, it seems the two could go hand in hand very well. It's a great feature that some, if not most, appreciate. I can understand how it would be unexpected behavior for some (you not withstanding, Don :) -- but If all else fails . . . why not make it an option?

No problem, it's just 2 lines of code and they are still there waiting to be un-out-commented (sp?). The deal is: you tell me how to call this option...

Why not simply use the same name as before when it comes to this: Auto-select the most recently used subfolder (when browsing Parent) ?

Well, maybe because the uninitialized newbie will have no clear idea what this means.
And remember: it worked (and will work) only after <Backspace> with focus on the list. Didn't it?

Well, maybe but the uninitialized newbie might get curious and try it, and with such a label he'll try to go to a folder, then his parent, and then realize what it means instantly! ;)

And, I used it only/mainly with the "Up" menuitem on the List ctxt menu, so that's the same as Backspace and make sure focus is on the List, so I can't really say for any "other use" actually.. but you said this one time:

Code: Select all

+ Improved the new "auto-select the most recently used subfolder"
feature introduced v5.10.0032 (but then just for the Backspace key).
Now any navigation via the list view...
        - dbl-clicking a folder: go down one level
        - <enter> on a folder: go down one level
        - <backspace> anywhere: go up one level
... will do it, namely select the most recently used subfolder (if
it's found in the history). For example, you now can quickly crawl
up and down a particular path by simply hitting <backspace> to go
up resp. <enter> to go down.
The feature also works across sessions.
Note: In three special cases, namely Desktop, MyDocuments, and
MyNetworkPlaces, going up to MyComputer (drives listing) would be
a dead-end because they are not featured as subfolders in the
MyComputer list view (which is the drives listing) and hence
cannot be auto-selected. To prevent this I simply disabled going
up by backspace-on-the-list from these special "folders" to
      MyComputer.
So basically only when Backspace when going up yeah, but this seems to mean it also worked the other way around: on Enter/Dbl-click when going down!

Related Tip: if you go down in a folder, and then wanna go up (in his parent) and have this "auto-select" feature, you can use "Back" instead of "Up" to get the same results ;) Of course, works only if you got there by browsing in the parent before, and didn't browse anywhere else in between (using other tabs, etc)

There can always be more details in help -- when I'm not sure what an option means, I hit the help button. :)

How about
"Select last active folder when navigating back" ?

This feature wasn't around long enough for me to get familiar with or used to it...but...after reading above posts, and trying a couple of things, if I understand it correctly, in the following setup:
Folder A
Sub-Folder 1
Sub-Folder 2
Sub-folder 3

And I'm browsing 'A', so have '1', '2' & '3' in the list, and then select '3' from list (not tree) to see contents, and without this feature, use of backspace will then select '1' in the list, that to me is more the definition of "automatic selection of items is rather non-expected behavior" than if '3' were re-selected since it was my prior location, and not '1', ok?

Thus, I'd be in favor of restoring this feature, and really don't believe it really needs a name, as it won't be listed in context menus (true?) so only place would be in help/docs, where it can easily be explained...

I might describe it as "Browse to parent folder and reselect current folder"...

It needs a name if made optional.

But I'm willing to go the other way round: reactivate it and wait until somebody asks me to turn it off!

For an option in config (if needed, but I really doubt it!), I'd maybe try:
"Reselect current folder on UP function"
And why would anyone want to always select the first/top file from list? :?
If there is someone, then you'll/we'll possibly hear from them, but don't hold your breath.

I just re-added it, without any option to turn it off. Let's see what happens...

You going to be okay with that done? Last I knew you personally found the feature unpleasant :)

:) I'll see. Actually I hardly use the program because I'm coding all the time...

(To those who don't get " ": That was a joke.)
