XYplorer Beta Club

I'm just starting to use XYplorer, which means i might have missed most of the configs, but for some reason, i notice that XYplorer acts a bit slow on my system, when compared with explorer.

On normal use, there's not that much difference, except in launch which tends to take a little bit longer than explorer.

The real difference is in folders with images, when i try to see the thumbnails. XYplorer takes forever to render thumbnails and when it's loading them, my computer completelly stops.

For some better description, i took some sample times:

Folder with 418 images, thumbnails 72x54 view:
XYplorer: 3minutes and 6 seconds.
Explorer: <20seconds

I'm running the 5.10.0048 version of xyplorer, on a laptop centrino 2.0 with 512mb of ram. (the disk is a samsung 7200rpm)

The interesting parameters are (a) the size (in pixels) of the originals, and (b) the type of the originals (JPEG, PNG, etc. ...). Could you give me those details?

Generally, I'm aware of the fact that XY is slower than WE with thumbnails. The difference should not be as large for sure, especially since both apps use the same GDI libraries to read the images. I will look into this when I find the time.
ADDENDUM: I almost forgot to mention: one reason for the speed difference is XY's resampling quality. It's the highest you'll get on Windows systems and that takes a little time.

You know, there's one reason why I never gave this issue that much attention: XYplorer can cache thumbnails (Configuration|Thumbnails), and I myself work a lot with pictures and "Cache thumbnails" is always on, which means any non-first load of thumbs is just lightning-fast. And on the first load I take the chance and do some yoga...

On my setup, XY sometimes reports "Creating thumb xxx/xxx (ESC to stop)" permanently... That is, even after the last thumb has been created.

Other times, if I go back to a dir where all the thumbs have already been cached, it'll show "Creating thumb 1/xxx (ESC to stop)" permanently.

I know, I'm full of shit and no one can reproduce... Please, why don't four people post that they can't reproduce it...

I've actually seen this a few times too, that's indeed a statusbar refresh problem, I mean XY did all its works and everything work fine, and (un)selecting an item makes it go away... though it can be confusing of course.
I don't remember for sure it the mousepointer stays with an hourglass or not, but I think it does not, only the SB isn't refreshed....

On a side note, I sometimes get (cached) thumbnails to be all black First time (when they got cached) worked fine, but then some of them will only show as a black square, gotta refresh Thumbs to "fix" this

Never got a reply to this (http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?t=1027) wish thread, but it seems to have a possible relationship to this one...I'd like some feedback on those ideas, if possible...thanks!

1. goto Configuration|Thumbnails
2. check "Superfast thumbnail creation (at slightly lesser quality; needs GDI+ installed)"
3. try again

Soooper!! Its really superfast. And, I infact suggest this to be default setting when someone downloads XY first time. First impression is very important, and let XY show this to newbies. One can always choose not to have superfast thumbs if higher quality is the preference.

This leads me to a question: (maybe its already asked)

Do you intend to have a button which sets all the configs to factory settings?? Might be useful for someone who has screwed up all the settings and wants to undo everything. That could be me too.

If you're ready to loose ALL your settings (color filters, MRUs, fav files/folders,etc etc) I think you could just create a blank (0byte) INI file "empty.ini" or w/e and load it as your configuration. XY will then start with all the default settings (only thing left here would probably be your Catalog, and Search Templates, and the NewItems menu)

While this works, it would be a LOT more user friendly to have an option within the settings to do a "Factory Reset". I mean you could argue that they could just delete the whole XY directory, download a new copy and use that Sure it works, but it's not exactly elegant.

I definitely agree! I just now have tried out the new warp speed thumbs! What a change! And yes, I'd suggest make it default if possible.

On a pix folder with 195 jpgs, with standard thumbs, it took roughly 77 secs (verbally timed) to generate the thumbs..with fast thumbs, it took about 6 secs! And...even though I turned cache off for this test, when I went to another similar folder and then came back to this folder that I'd fast thumb'd before, regenerating them took even less time! About 3-4 secs! This was using 54x54 sized ones, and at that size, I can't tell any difference that would make using slower/quality vers needed.

Just wondering: Is there a logical reason why re-thumbing a previous folder takes about half the time, even with XY cache disabled?

I'm using GDI+ for the warp speed, so I guess Windows does some caching there.
