More optimal autosizing of columns?

I vaguely recall this being discussed before but I'm not having luck finding a solution.
I use the symbol coloring style in the label column, which means that for me the optimal width of the label column is its minimum width (~18px).
I also use autosize columns - see where this is going?
The end result is XY continually makes the label column wide enough to show the full header (~50px) and I'd prefer it only worry about fitting the content.
Anyone have suggestions to minimize this struggle?
Beyond changing at least one of those two settings...

Same issue here, very frustrating. I do not want to play with column width, XY certainly has the information it needs to resize columns without giving me "...".
I just want the columns to be
at maximum width always. If anyone can help please let me know.

It was like this a long time, but then users voted for always showing the full column headers (added in v6.00.0000 - 2007-05-06 23:33).
But in this particular case I'm with you. Improvement coming...

Don't understand. Autosize Columns works perfect.

Whenever you say things like this I have to go search to see if I was involved in convincing you to make that change and am now arguing with my past-self.
Fortunately, I'm not finding a thread about this particular change so maybe I'm off the hook.
EDIT: That said this change is a nice improvement so if it was past-me... he is a real moron!
