Moderators Wanted

XYplorer is doing so well now, and the forum and everything is getting so busy, that I just cannot handle forum and website and coding all alone anymore! So, it might be a good time now to elect some
forum moderators. I guess the 1k+ posters are a natural first pick. Anybody among you interested in playing moderator? Well, I know that many of you are practically doing the job informally for many years now. So it's just a formality now, you'd being doing it
officially, like wearing the
sheriff star. So, who wants one?
thanks,
Don

I am in.

Glad to hear it!
I'd nominate both Serendipity and TheQwerty if they are interested as both have devoted enough time here to be considered for that task and seem to have the proper temperment for dealing with "issues"...I'd do it myself as well if my eyesight doesn't become more of an issue than already..
I'd suggested years ago that you could use some help to keep the spam under control and while I've not always been as quick to detect some trolls as you have, I've also found/reported some spam quite quickly.

I am both thrilled and humbled by the appointment!
Now -- what i think would be appropriate for Don to do is provide us as deputies for the main sherriff a set of standrads that he expects us to follow so that we have consistency when possible in how we treat others here, ok?
I've never had this ability before on a phpBB system so am unfaimilar with tools available but have run my own chatroom since 2007 so have experiance in moderation using my own software.

Ahem, the basic idea here was to reduce my work. I think you all are here long enough to know the unwritten rules as good as myself. You are part of them, you made them.
PS: I simply gave you the default rights for "Global moderators". Can you delete users? Probably not. So the odd troll is left to me, isn't it?

Hey, Congrats guys!
Each of your names are so familiar to me and others, I'm sure, I know the site and help will be that better and stronger with you'll on board.
Have you ever been in traffic and saw someone do something stupid and said to yourself, "I wish I was a cop?" Well, now you got the power.
But remember, with great power comes... yada, yada, yada.

So I will follow this quickly handicraft guidelines as proved advisable over the years:
Code: Select all
Welcome to our forum.
Please note: each community needs rules. This are our basics.
* Before opening a new thread, search the forum for existent answers.
* Open a dedicated thread for each single question, best in the relevant sub-forum.
* Use a most informative description as subject for new threads.
* We prefer English as forum language.
* Describe exactly what you are after, but don't write novels.
* If you report malfunctions, describe your environment too.
* Keep the size of posted images small. Use a tool to reduce the size if needed.
* Respect the netiquette. Do not spam. No advertising. No warez. No deep-linking to other sources.
* The moderators are allowed to point you in the right direction or edit your post accordingly.
In detail:
* Before opening a new thread, search the forum for existent answers.
More sources for answers are e.g.:
--XYplorer.chm
--http://www.xyplorer.com/support.htm
--History.txt: http://www.xyplorer.com/licenselounge.php
* Open a dedicated thread for each single question, best in the relevant sub-forum.
Many different questions in one thread leads mostly to hard to follow chaos.
And one thread per question is enough. No cross-posting in different sub-forums.
Best would be to search and reuse already existent threads.
* Use a most informative description as subject for new threads.
Others may search for the same topic and a proper subject helps to find.
Also, a interesting thread title may encourage more people to read and help.
* Since this is a place for people from all around the world, we prefer English as forum language.
You may use an translator if you are not able to write in English or hope a fellow member can aid.
* Describe exactly what you are after, but don't write novels.
Use short lines, punctuations, and split your lines into paragraphs.
If appropriate, provide before/after examples of your request.
* If you report malfunctions, describe your environment too.
E.g. XYplorer version, Operation System, Bitness: 32- / 64-bit?
(See "Xyplorer > Help > Various Information" menu item)
Describe each step to reproduce and what you have already done.
* Keep the size of posted images small. Use a tool to reduce the size if needed.
* Respect the netiquette. Do not spam. No advertising. No warez. No deep-linking to other sources.
* The moderators are allowed to point you in the right direction or edit your post accordingly.
That may cover, non-exclusive:
-- editing subject lines to better fit the topic
-- moving post to related sub-forum
-- editing post to remove unwanted or revealing details or full-quoting
-- reformatting post to e.g. split lines or reduce size of images
-- deleting threads of double postings or posts of spammers
-- split or merge threads if advisable
-- reprimand or even ban users not following this rules
Thanks for your understanding.
Don't know if we are enabled to do all of this or not. The time may show.
But that are the basics I can think off. Not craved in stone but just some ideas.
It's just I would like to know what I am allowed to do and on what I should keep an eye on.
What do you think? What's fine, what's not?
And thanks for the faith and honour.

Well, I personally would not make it too formal. I'm rather a common-sense hand-shake kind of a Colognian.

But maybe it's useful to have a couple of laws written in stone as a backup. Where did you find the laws? Or did you make them yourself?
BTW, a 2K+ postnik,
TheQwerty, has joined the fab four, so now we have a handful of moderators.
The squad is complete.

I don't want to be that formal neither.
I just wanted to define my borders and see if we can agree to some basics. (And maybe have a source to link/refer to)
Maybe you don't want me (us) to take care about some of this points at all.
Not that I want to handle them as strict as written myself. But you should provide a common way how we should act.
If there is no need to take such agreement,... it's fine too.
That rules are mine, but collected on several forums over the years.
