Excel Files Must be Downloaded from the INTERNET?

I cannot view Excel files normally. When I click a file to preview it, I get a File Download pop-up, with the usual warning about downloading files from the internet. I searched this site and see that others have complained about not being able to view Excel files, however I didn't see any posts that had quite the same issue.

I was wondering if there is something I can do to fix this odd behavior. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

P.S. I'm using version 11.50

Have you tried any of the suggestions found in the FAQ?
http://xyplorer.com/faq-topic.php?id=office

If that doesn't help, please go to the Help menu in XYplorer, select Various Information, copy the dialog's content, and paste it in this thread. It would also help to know what version of Excel/Office you're using.

Thanks for answering. I checked the Faq link and don't really understand it.

This is a known problem with MS Office. The Microsoft Office system intentionally sets a BrowserFlags registry value for its file types to force the documents to open within the Office application window and not inside the Internet Explorer window. This concerns XYplorer's Office preview because it uses an embedded Internet Explorer for the job.

From the above FAQ, I have inferred (perhaps erroneously) that XYplorer is deliberately using Internet Explorer. If that is the case, then what I see as an issue, XYplorer sees as correct action. Why would a file on my computer use IE to open a file? This is very confusing. Also, I don't have the same problem previewing Word documents.

I did check the folder properties. There was no reason to change anything as the Advanced tab had the correct box checked.

I'm using Office 2003.

I'm sorry.. I should have asked this in the previous post, but a screenshot of the dialog you're seeing would also be useful.

I tired to upload the screenshots but I get a message that says, "The extension bmp is not allowed."

Trying again.

The screenshot with the Security Alert message is the latest development. I never saw this message before. I chose another .xls file and got the File Download Message. This time, however, when I chose the Open button, the file displayed immediately and looked like my regular .xls file. Yesterday, I got an oddly formatted version.

Another thought is that it might be related to an NTFS alternate data stream... You could try running Sysinternal's streams tool to list and remove any ADS attached to that file.

Sadly if that doesn't help I'm out of ideas - sorry!
Hopefully someone that has access to XP and Office 2003 can enlighten us. :?

Thanks for trying.
The problem is not that one file. I can open the file, I just can't preview it with XYPlorer. The problem I originally wanted to address was the File Download issue. I don't even know what an alternate data stream is. I will try the link, though. Thanks for that.

I couldn't get it to preview xls-files either.
It came up with the same message as yours and after I clicked Open, another message appeared, telling me that the "other" app was busy with the option to swap to the "other" app, after I clicked on that button nothing happened and I actually had to kill XY after a while.

So for me I think I leave it as it was and don't preview Office files in XY!

Sorry I wasn't more helpful but at least you know it's not just your system.

Hey thanks!

Actually that was helpful. I'll stop digging around trying to figure it out. The glitch is with XYPlorer, not my system. A relief.
