@Don: I'm repeating myself. I never ever thought I would spend a significant amount of time to mess around with icons (sic!) but the combination of benefit and ease of use is fatally compelling.

More serious, I remember exactly two times mainly dedicated to 'packaging'.

1. My first computer: It was a "IBM Personal Computer/AT" 286 with turbo switch. I did spend countless days (!) to just tweak the prompt to my own liking (don't remember wether it was config.sys or autoexec.bat though).

2. My first (and only) printer: It was a colored HP Deskjet xyz. First, I spent weeks do download every single working copy rar-file of Photoshop 5.0 (28k modem) - just to spent another weeks to create those ridiculous and stupid Desktop backgrounds ("An error has occurred. To continue ...) - just to print them on my brand new color printer on my brand new and 'cheap' glossy photo paper.

It was funny, but today I have to d´say: what a waste of time ......[facepalm smilie to be inserted here]

Here are the results of some playing with v12.30.0209:

PRO\ matches PRO and no subfolders = as expected
PRO\ /r matches PRO and subfolders = as expected
PRO*\ matches PRO and PRO.TEST and no subfolders = as expected
PRO*\ /r matches PRO and PRO.TEST, but no subfolders = NOT as expected

Am I making or expecting something wrong with the last example?

No, I don't think so. I was about to complain on this, because I wanted to use (recursively) a new icon for all folders starting with "Temp". So this makes two of us.

As far as I can tell: yes! Thank you. I am also no more able to reproduce the "move to outside the iconic box"-problem.

I will be able to test it all more thoroughly tomorrow, in my normal work flow.

BTW, yes, you now need a warning: "XYplorer is addictive. Do not start XYploring!"

Yep, it's spectacular. Does anybody know a file manager that can do this? Total icon control, generic and specific, files and folders, entire GUI, fully portable, full speed, simple usage? I don't. Not even close. :biggrin:

TC has it as part of Portable Files Associations.

Even if you can't change some parts (i.e. internally handled archives icons) you have a lot of control over it, i.e. icons/apps may vary depending on files attributes:

May I suggest rename this new feature to Portable Icon Association because:
- It customizes folders also, not just files
- We already have Portable File Association (PFA), so, having PIA would be consistent and easier to remember

Yes, indeed "Portable Icon Associations" is technically correct and better than "Portable File Icons".

But:
- PFA does folders, too. So that's no point. And file as a generic term for files and folders is okay. After all this is a file manager, not a "file and folder manager".
- The current name also works fine I think: it's catchy and says what it means.
- "Portable File Icons" implies that you have to carry the icons as well, not just the associations , so in this regard it is even better than "Portable Icon Associations".
- Too late, anyway. Since MLS, I cannot just quickly change a term as in the old days...

Here's a full update of my mini icon pack for folders.
The purpose was to use them as the default folder icons for whole drives (e.g. red for backup, green for flashdrive...), hence their low-profile.

I gave a try to Win7 icons. They look much "finer" by default [good], but much more blurry and their half-opened look makes them visually noisy in a huge folder [bad IMHO].

So the pack contains:
- default Win7 - with colored tabs [only in 16x16 size]
- Win7 modified (I "closed" them, changed the borders, etc.) - with colored tabs [only in 16x16 size]
- WinXP default - full color
- WinXP default - with colored tabs [now in 16/32/48/96]
- 2 WinXP "Incoming" icons (Original Bonus)

Mandatory Note: Once again, they're based on the original default folder icons taken from Windows so the original copyright may apply, blabla...

Don, maybe two suggestions:

* Maybe it would be a good idea if PFI would be suppressed in the default Icons folder. Reason: I have named some of my icons in such a way - well, you might call it stupid, or intelligent, or logical - that PFI is matching their names too (so I have to keep preview opened, to avoid confusion). (Of course, a general solution would be a list of "off range" directories, but well, that seems far fetched.)

* Maybe another interesting idea would be to generally put some buttons onto the configuration panels (for instance the "Customize File Icons" button in the vicinity of "Enable custom file icons" check box). I admit that I am not very fond of the tools menu and would prefer the complete control via the configuration form (or at least as an alternative).

Nice, but it's only the selected icon which is only used for the one selected folder in the tree. Much more useful would be the normal icon.
