I could see it as a new tab in IP so that Preview is left available when/if we ever get to doing actual preview of file within Zip...somelike like a "Contents" or "Index" tab?TheQwerty wrote:Leaving it as a custom preview also has the advantage that we are accustomed to previews being read-only, so it provides a clear sign that this is not (yet) about creating/adding/extracting.Borut wrote:I see and it would be quite OK with me. Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

"in situ backups" - great image (know it, because that's my educational background).admin wrote:A nice way for quick compressed in situ backups. The only additional step compared to normal paste: you will have to be prompted for a name of the zip (might default to the name of the first file?).
Yep, exactly. When I am doing some sort of "quick tests" just to decide making a "project" out of it - be it scripting, image manipulation or whatever- this could be THE helper. And more grounded, that would simply offer an easy and straightforward approach for sloppy backups. No setting up of whatever scripts, just select stuff on the left tab, and paste it "squiiiiiized" on the right tab (<ctrl+c> and <ctrl+i>).
Naming: yes, let's stay boring. Naming defaults to the (base)name of the first file/folder.
Cheers,

I would vote for floating preview. And does nobody like my previous idea of archivereport scripting command (similar to folderreport)?Borut wrote:I see and it would be quite OK with me. Yes, archivereport can be done (in phase, sigh, 2).

Re: ZIP Support (so I can finally retire "PowerDersk Pro")
Hey - some new entries here since this morning
It seems I have to correct something where I wasn't exact - so I try to say it better. Some is generel, some is just up to me...
- most often needed by me is just extract of a complete zip (incl. sub-folders) to a specified location. (Like install / update of some programs etc.) And this should also be scriptable. Just only this would be worth it (for me).
- next is just to *see* the files and folders (not the contained data) of a zip.
Here I wasn't exact: as I think it's a very logical place to show it, and as it was talked about, I said "show zip-file like a (virtual) folder". But it might as well be like a removable drive (say like a USB stick), or even be in Preview Pane. Though *I* feel that it looks better as part of Tree & List, as it's the very same structure. Be it folder or drive.
- 3rd: creating or adding to a zip: good to have - but how to do if it's not only files but also some folder structure? On first sight could be a problem?
Sorry: too late to think more about - have to say good night...

Re: ZIP Support (so I can finally retire "PowerDersk Pro")
I'm not a real user of floating preview so can't relate to it that well -but- as i stated before, wouldn't using that to show the index/contents interfere with any possible later enhancement to show actual file data? That's why I'd suggested a brand new IP tab strictly for this type of file since it's such an oddball situation...as I understand it, that would also allow for it to have columns for the various "file" contents, like actual size and such.
I disagree that it should be on tree because it's NOT a true folder/file structure so having a special place for it seems best solution.
The other advantage of adding zip into XY would be, in some cases one less potential issue with 64-bit context menus..us 32-bit OS folks don't have that problem so we can use 3rd party Zip utilities easier...but 64-bit folks are sorta stuck sometimes, I hear, so this could be real benefit there.

(Just a little note from the can of worms: Of course, if WinRAR is installed then it is simple to support RAR via command line.)

Hm, no feedback?

Just got home from work. Works as expected.admin wrote:Hm, no feedback?
I expect it to become of even more benefit on 'work' machine which is under customer control. They've just rolled out Win 7 x64 with 7z, unfortunately w/o installing the x86 7z shell stuff.
Cheers,

Re: ZIP Support (so I can finally retire "PowerDersk Pro")
Well, just tried and like it. Works nicely. I can get rid of my 7zip script as all i need mostly are these basic zip actions you've provided.admin wrote:Hm, no feedback?
Some thoughts:
To extend this further, I was wondering if you could provide some SCs for the zip menu items so that advanced users can automate it (with scripting) to make it work seamlessly such that on double clicking a zip file user is taken to the folder directly (all the intermediate steps such as extract to folder named xyz, go to xyz folder, open it are not visible or are backgrounded).
Specifically i am thinking of SC:
Code: Select all
zip (filename, mode)Also, someway of getting the correct name of the folder where archive will be extracted. XY already knows this and offers xyz-01 if xyz already exists. How about extending SC get to get info for to-be-extracted folder name or to-be-archived file name? like:
get("extractedfoldername")
get ("archivedfilename")
I know one can achieve the same using SC exists to check for existing file/folder but having a dedicated SC would make it easier i think.
Re: ZIP Support (so I can finally retire "PowerDersk Pro")
I tried selecting a bunch of files in a folder and then Zip > Add to Zip archive...
After entering the name of the zip in the dialog, I get several warnings of "File not found or reading permissions missing."
After that, the generated zip doesn't contain all the selected files.

Oha! Never got this. So, were the reading permissions missing?Marco wrote:I tried selecting a bunch of files in a folder and then Zip > Add to Zip archive...

Nope. I'll try with elevated rights, but I'm not the only one experiencing this.
EDIT: bug happens even when elevated. And I'm 99.999% I don't have weird ACLs causing this.

Re: ZIP Support (so I can finally retire "PowerDersk Pro")
I get this too. I always tried single file before so did not see this, but with multiple files i get this error all the time.admin wrote:Oha! Never got this. So, were the reading permissions missing?Marco wrote:I tried selecting a bunch of files in a folder and then Zip > Add to Zip archive...

Re: ZIP Support (so I can finally retire "PowerDersk Pro")
Don, Could you please add the ability to drop a file on an existing zip to add it there? That's something that would be a big plus for me!
Thanks!
Thanks!
