In the "Customize Toolbar" dialog the "My Computer" icon still has no arrow. It's very unimportant, I just mention it because Don is a perfectionist.

Ah! There it surfaces: Under the hood I generate and handle the icon for MyComputer in a totally different way than all the other toolbar icons! :) What you are witnessing here are the symptoms of quietly moving towards UDB (user-defined buttons) ... 8)

I never bought CTB, or did I? UDB is better because just as with UDC you create new interface elements.

---------------from way back in this thread------

jacky wrote:When I first thought of this I think I called it Custom TB Buttons, probably because it was linked to Custom KS, since in my mind those new buttons could be made for about any feature in XY (inc. UDC, so scripts as well!), just like with KS.
Since UDB and UDC are close, maybe CTB (Custom Toolbar Buttons) might be better... ? It's somewhat closer to CKS which I feel makes sense, yet not as close as UDB & UDC are (which are two very different things, unlike CKS & CTB would be)
Yes, I can follow you here. CTB is fine.

A CTB would have the following user-defined props:
- Name (used as button tooltip, and in the Customize Toolbar dialog)
- Action (a script)
- Icon source (a file that contains an icon; ICO, EXE ...).
Seems that Don did go for and buy into CTB on page 3 of this thread! :P
I also think CTB is better as it has "TB" within in, which makes it clearer what it deals with.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Well, as jc quoted I think you did, yes ;)
And you see that as "adding new interface elements" but I look at it differently: UDC creates new features/commands, whereas CKS or CTB do not, only new ways to access already existing commands. Which is why you can assign CKS or CTB to UDC ! ;)

If there is some kind of voting going on then I vote for CTB too, especially after what jacky just explained.

I admit that I apparently bought it, but I never really bought it!
I still prefer UDB. And who says it does not create new commands; those buttons will handle a script easily... just like the Catalog (multi-line will come...).

Well, still the name is misleading then : user-defined buttons, as in only an interface for something, not an actual new command.
I prefer CTB myself, but I know the choice is yours eventually, even if you're wrong. ;)

Well, to me, CTB (by that name) doesn't imply or have any limitations on how little or how much one can customize them or what features they may have, only that it's restricted to Toolbar buttons as opposed to any other buttons that the appl may use, such as the orange one on IP...UDB implies that any and all buttons can be user defined, which may not be true.

Plus, as jacky wrote, UDB and UDC are just a bit too similar and can more easily get mixed up/confused while CTB is pretty much unique at this point and stands alone.

I think from a new user POV that CTB would be the more easily located name in Help/wiki, given that Toolbar is part of name...I'd more likely search for "custom toolbar" when looking for this feature, not "user buttons"...

Okay, you won. I quick web research shows that CTB is the more common term for the thing. Hereby I officially buy it. :)

No, we didn't win...and you didn't lose...XY itself won! 8)
Because...it's my feeling that we all want XY to be easily learned by the newbie/'average Joe user', and that was why I was advocating CTB...so I'm glad that your checking validated that point to some extent.
