Maybe it's one placeholder icon vs multiple drive icons that could be possible/typical with removables?
Not possible technically.
Tip: Wrap your bar in separators. Then you see a "||" (double separator) and know there is something missing.

Or you could use the "My computer" button first, then the "Removable drives" group, and finally a separator. Nice, easy and practical way.

thankfully "separator" is on top of the list and i already had the idea of temporarily using it until a placeholder eventually show up.
now ill try littlebigs suggestion and see what i like more.
i see the point of saving space but as hallgren said, one placeholder for a tip of whats there instead of many empty drives.
