So this would work?
Code: Select all
Address Bar and Toolbar Stacked
Address Bar First
-
Tree and Catalog Stacked
Catalog First
For that part, yes, I believe so...but not sure how you mean "First", because when they are stacked, first can be first on stack, or first on top...so...may need to say "Left/Top" if those are the choices.

"Stacked" works well in both cases, and I think j_c_hallgren may be right about using "first". You may be better off with "top" or "left" or you could consider using "above" or "below" (you used "above" when referring to the catalog above the tree previously).

I need to avoid a flexible caption (that adjusts to the Stacked value). So "first" covers "left" and "top".

Alright, so you were looking for one single term that could be used for either the "stacked" (vertical) or the "side-by-side" (horizontal) layout. So "first" may be your only choice.

I don't have a problem with "Stacked" but keep in mind "Dual Panes" are "Horizontal Panes" so "stacked" breaks any consistency.

I think "horizontal" is an established term with respect to Dual Panes. That overrides consistency needs.

Sorry but I disagree about First covering both...that's why i suggested using both words with a slash...because as i mentioned, in a stacked case, first can be interpreted as the first item on stack (bottom) or the last item (top) while in a horizontal case, it's more understood as being the left one.

if i understand it correct, about captions, why not make it simple as it's now with layouts?
[Tree & Catalog], [Tree] [Catalog] and vice versa.

Wouldn't work -- remember that existing Layout refers to Addr Bar and Toolbar which are possibly on that one single line -- that will never occur with Tree/Catalog.

I agree. Even though it is not the same line, it is the logical representation. Human brain will easily digest that.

Since the stored Layouts shall also include visibility, there is another terminological problem to be solved:
2014-05-27_181840.png
The following commands should now be added to the top menu:
Save Window Layout As...
Load Saved Window Layout
Probably right before "Tabs" (which is a weird item here, but I see no better place for it...

)
But: the sub menu is also named "Layout" -- confusing! What about calling it
"Arrangement" instead?

I still think "Layout" or "Workspace" nails it best.

Because the save/load menu will save all visible settings, maybe you can call those items: Save Workspace as... and Load Workspace

Workspace, yep, I take that, thanks!

This concept is also known as Workspaces
