Thanks for all the suggestions. Maybe there's no one-key-fit-all in screen recording softwares. :eh:

Interesting thread. GifCam was the top find for me. One of those tools that make you donate immediately. Big thanks to Regmos and binocular222 (for the ahk script)

Nothing new for me in the regular capture department. Still looking for the ideal tool. My prerequisites:
- delay-function (to capture dropdowns)
- capture scrolling windows (everywhere, not just browsers)

I own a whole bunch of licenses, but all have their drawbacks:

FastStone: Great video capture, lightweight, quick results. But editing functions are very rudimentary: Numbered stamps are pixelated instead of vector, tiny icons, the output always flattened ...

SnagIt: Been using it since v7: Tag your shots and filter them, great for re-editing (vector graphics), great workflow if only they would live up to their promises. Klutzy and bloated. Newer versions never fix the main issues, only introduce interface changes and improved features of marginal value.

No one here mentioned MadCap or any of the integrated solutions that come with helpwriting packages like Dr.Explain.

Great freeware out there, like regmos I am a big fan. Have Greenshot and PicPick on my stick, although I never really use them.

I'm not sure, if I understand you right. Snagit does that.

Delay have been there for ages, is just takes a few clicks, or a new custom profile.

Scrolling works everywhere with the default "All-in-one" profile, and you can even capture part of a scrolling window with "Custom scroll".

The only thing i missed in Snagit, was an Imgur.com plugin, but then this guy provided one, and now I can't wish for more.

That's true. In earlier versions the Scroll functions had many glitches that got solved - eventually, after massive user complaints. They're less responsive in other areas. Always readily acknowledging issues but then never doing anything about it. Since you're a user, too, some examples:

Seperate buttons/commands to save as a) your fav img-format, b) as .snag
Great to build up step-by-step instructions. BUT: Both buttons fall back on the very same dialog. Totally spoils the whole idea of having 2 buttons in the first place. For every step##.png to save, you start over, perusing the dropdown for .png which falls back to .snag after you saved your vector.snag in between. First time I complained about that was in v8, now we're at v11.

Even freeware like Greenshot is smart enough to know when you're typing text: pressing "a" will not trigger the Arrow tool, "l" will not trigger the line tool, etc. Not so with SnagIt. It won't wait until you ESC out of text mode, but activate those other drawing tools inside a textbox, even though they make no sense in that context. This rules out the whole keyboard range as shortcuts, you are forced to use up precious modifier keys and tweak your ahk scripts ....

Could go on and on and on...
Camtasia is great, though. Nothing to bitch about, seems like they got a different team working on that baby.

I've been a SnagIt user for years, but the software is a huge resource hog. For that reason I don't keep it running in the background. As someone pointed out above, the lack of native Imgur support is a huge draw back. Also above, the plug in here https://github.com/hmemcpy/SnagitImgur is a life saver. (btw I made the icon for it  ) The tool that I always have running on my computer is ScreenShot Captor. SSC works well with the most awesome (but now defunct) sImgurUploader http://www.donationcoder.com/forum/inde ... ic=33204.0 Sadly sImgurUploader doesn't work since Imgur had some changes made to the way it works. The only thing that's missing from SSC is the ability to capture lists of text (which SnagIt can do). Also SSC's scrolling window capture is clunky.

Also fyi: In case anyone doesn't know about Gizmo's site:
http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-fr ... e-tool.htm
It's a main goto site for all things freeware...

Grab a copy of MyImgur

Configure it to your needs, and use it as a custom uploader tool in SSC. Done right, MyImgur closes after uploading, and the URL will be in your clipboard.
SSC is the ability to capture lists of text (which SnagIt can do)
Don't upgrade to snagit 12 then. They have removed that option.

Just stumbled over MiniCap by Mouser (Screenshot Captor).
It's a little portable thing that supports a wide range of commands, perfect for running from PhraseExpress, Autohotkey or similar programs.

And of course from a XY script

GifCam v4.5 is out.

Code: Select all

Crop: with the nostalgic “Marching ants” selection effect.

Hue And Saturation: Because saturation and shading of two colors generate “good quality looking” gif.

Other Fixes and Changes:
-Fixing double extension “gif.gif” file name problem.
-Renaming “yoyo” option name to “add reverse frames” clearer function name.
-Removing “Add 0.1 Sec Delay” and “Remove 0.1 Sec Delay” options because the right click edit menu is getting bigger and adding delay can be done more practically by dragging delay label or from “keyboard input” window.
-Fixing dragging delay stops.
-Centering all windows to main GifCam window.
-Fixing power of 10 gif size in preview window.

I like the program LICEcap: http://www.cockos.com/licecap/
--=LICEcap is an intuitive but flexible application (for Windows and now OSX), that is designed to be lightweight and function with high performance.=--
The script makes the program portability: https://softwarespot.wordpress.com/code/vbscript/
-------------------------------------
Also to optimize the footage you can use my favorite tool BoxTop: http://www.boxtopsoft.com
Which have now become free.
For example the first GIF of this post: http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic. ... ee#p130104 using SuperGIF fell three times!
