With XY I'm trying to avoid such dependencies. For example on my system I have WMP completely disabled and still can preview all sorts of media types through XY right through the low level API.

There must be something special
(1) about MOV (well, it's Apple...) AND
(2) about your system AND
(3) about XY
that causes the behavior you see. I currently cannot see me employing the ActiveX technology, so that leaves it to you working out point (2) (your system). :| (Unless you focus on (1) and convince Apple to change the format... )
With my lousy MSDN skills, I wonder whether Windows needs WMP enabled to have its embedding functionality intact. IE (admittedly deeper embedded in Windows) can, at least in Windows 7, be disabled while the engine is still there for other software to use. I can imagine MS taking a similar route with WMP?
The embedding works. I can see MOV in xplorer2 in the embedded WMP. That might mean my WMP is enabled.

However, when I attempt to open a file in WMP I get this screen (and I get it since I uninstalled WMP years ago. :?):
WMP9-welcome.png

That would support the idea that disabling WMP leaves it available for embedding, and thus usable in XYplorer. Would that make for a cleaner and/or more easily diagnosable multimedia preview in XYplorer?

As for the intro screen, that seems the usual screen when starting Windows Media Player for the first time after (re-)install. It seems disabling WMP leaves it available for both embedding as well as later re-enabling.

I checked my notes and need to correct my report: I did uninstall WMP 10 in the year 2006, and Windows rolled back to WMP 9 for which I did not find a way to uninstall. So apparently I'm now on a fresh WMP 9 and just did not OK the welcome screen.

Embedding WMP in XY? I'm not sure how much work that would be and where the problems are lurking, I have never done it. :|

My understanding is that since XP, both the IE engine (which XYplorer already depends on) as well as the WMP engine are considered a core part of Windows. I'm not sure about Windows 2000, but given that only XP and up still receive security updates, it seems a reasonable baseline.

As for the work and "surprises" involved, I have no idea. However, in the case of the OP and his experiences with embedded WMP in xplorer2, he got better results; there has been at least one previous thread where someone mixing multimedia software got into trouble with .mp3 preview in XYplorer. As far as diagnostics is concerned, it would be much easier for users to confirm a file is playable at all if they can simply open it in WMP (even if the power-user cohort which XYplorer targets, seems prone to disabling it :)).

Yes, if someone sends me the code I'll try it.

BTW, XY does not depend on the IE engine, only the HTML preview does. XY will run without problems on systems without IE.

Thank you for the info. I thought you posted somewhere about XYplorer being able to preview what IE can preview (perhaps .gif/.jpg/.png in addition to .html/.xml) and/or did you mean the ActiveX embedding in IE? Regardless, without using tweaking software (and in the process more than likely crippling the Windows install) the IE engine (as well as the WMP one) will always be there.

Since v7.90.0027 - 2009-01-05 14:36 XY is not dependent on IE.

When I find the time I'll try to embed the beast...

Made a little research. It's trivial. Will add it as alternative audio/video player in one of the next versions...

ER, no -- the progress bar scrolls beautifully showing the elapsed time but no sound ; no video on mov files.

Did I miss something? I thought I was supposed to do a complete reformat and / or buy a new pc at this stage ? That is not having enough RAM to run virtual system. And the fault apparently lying with my specific config.

If MOV is still not working in the embedded WMP in XY, but is working in the embedded WMP in other file managers, then I'm out of ideas at the moment. :?

Can you preview other video formats in the latest XY?
