So, is this thumbnail generation limited to Fast Mode, ie. with limited quality?

Actually, I just checked the difference between an old, high quality, cached pdf thumbnail and a freshly generated one - I couldn't see any difference.

I wasn't sure from the v15.80.0207 beta notes if the new algorithm used for generation of non-image thumbnails like pdf files is now being used in the other modes in addition to "High Speed" or if that is coming later? I think you had mentioned using it in other modes somewhere. Thanks.

No, it's now implemented for all modes.

And, yes, there is also a visible quality difference with PDFs.

Thanks, I improved the change log now. :)

Thanks Don, a quick followup... For those of us like yourself probably, who already had thumbnails of pdfs using PDF Exchange Viewer, is your new algorithm being used to generate the thumbs over the old method (whatever that was) (ie., if I recreate the thumbs from a folder from scratch will the new algorithm be automatically used)? It certainly seems to be based on speed of generation.

Yes. The old mechanism is only used under XP and if the new one fails. (But I still have to see a case where the new one fails and the old one does not. Actually I never saw the new one fail once.)

Often, PDF thumbnails display only as black boxes. Not all PDFs do; not the same PDFs from one computer to another; and not the same thumbnails size (seems default #1 and #3 are often black, #2 usually thumbnails properly). Oddly enough, Preview and Mouse Down Blowup work fine.

I have not yet tried to narrow down the exact circumstances. I was hoping it's a known issue with an easy fix. Help?

Hm, I have never seen this here. Are you using Adobe for PDF viewing?

Yes, Acrobat Pro XI (can't stand DC). I don't have the stand-alone Reader installed, just the full Acrobat Pro.

Now I think about it, on one machine I have only the Reader, and I don't recall seeing the black thumbnails on that one.
I suppose I am going to have to try to define the exact circumstances after all.

All my compies are Win 7. I do see black thumbnails on both 32bt and 64bt.

You know, if Acrobat is part of it, I'm not going to spend a second on bug hunting. I can only say: do not use Acrobat. It's crapware.

Really ... what should I install, then?

Remember, we are talking only about PDF thumbnails in Xyplorer. Is Xyplorer invoking Acrobat (Distiller?) to generate thumbnails? Can I keep Acrobat—need it for work, non-negotiable—and install something else to fix the thumbnail issue?

No, you can't. You are doomed. :P

Doomplorer. :blackstorm:

I will work on defining those circumstances ...
