another idea : select a file in each pane, then invoke sync scroll, and they auto align on same line, ready to scroll

Yes, makes sense to me too, atleast the way i use sync scroll for. Go for it.

Guessing a null pointer exception crept in somewhere and can crash XY...

From a fresh copy of XY v9.50.0108:
1) Enable dual pane.
2) Put both Lists in List view.
3) Resize window so that each pane can be scrolled. (Helps to change locations away from Desktop.)
4) Scroll one pane right once (with mouse wheel).
5) Enable Sync Scroll.
6) Scroll the pane from step four left (again with wheel).
