I had thought of this already, and I think yeah auto-locking the SR tab upon creation would be a good idea.
j_c_hallgren wrote:And auto-renaming of tabs is basically what happens on "normal" tab when you go somewhere else, so that behavior is typical.
No, it's not, I think you're mistaken here. We should only talk about renaming tabs for tabs with NAMES, a tab with its location as TITLE does NOT have a name. A "normal" tab does not have a name, so it uses its location as title.
The title of a tab is what you see on XY besides its icon.
The name of a tab is a text defined by the user (with exeption of the SR tab that can be created by XY) that will be used as title, and that will always be used even if the tab changes mode or location. It can only be renamed or lost by user action.

So, going from "Search results" to its location doesnt mean the tab is renamed, but looses its name!!
In XYplorer when a tab has a name, its name is NEVER changed or lost unless the user says so. This is the rule we're trying not to break here I think.

So, if for some reason the SR tab would loose its name, and uses its location as title, it would not be a standard behavior! Hence the idea of locking the tab (upon creation), so it cannot be anything but search results in that tab, as its name states, unless the user decides so and unlocks the tab.

Jacky, I've read your last post a few times, and I think we're still having the terminology use conflicts, but essentially we're saying the same thing.
What shows on tab next to icon is for all practical purposes the NAME and TITLE together.
Because, as I understand it, one cannot have a tab NAME that does not show on screen, correct? And the TITLE, as you define it, is never hidden from view either, true? And when user sets it to a custom value, it shows as title. So I don't see that there is any difference in the two.
A location used for title IS that tabs NAME, just that it was not user keyed.
When you are keying in a value, that IS both the name AND title.

Now, IF user sets it to a value, like "MUSIC", they can still see actual path by hover, but the USER knows that contents are what they put there. By contrast, the NAME/TITLE of Search Results gives no clue as to what is contained there, especially when user has reselected another path after viewing SR.

Having the SR value be kept unless users unlock it would be a reasonable compromise in this term conflict, because that would prevent me from easily altering the contents which causes the mis-match of contents and name/title.

I'm 100% d'accord with jacky's last post and about 72% with JC's.

Anyway, from the next version we'll have the SR tab auto-locked upon creation, and it will stay like this until somebody proves it's bullshit. (In that case I'll make it configurable  )

I'm just a bit curious about what that 28% is...
Given that jacky appears to have used the terms name and title interchangeably in some prior posts to this thread, at least as I read them...and then seems to make them unique in last post...it's either one or the other...

And I DID agree that auto-locking of SR tab would solve the issue.

Yeah, I may not have used to "right" term in some prior post to distinguish tab's titles & names; which is why I made good care in the last one to use the appropriate term where needed, to (try to) avoid any confusion 8)

Here's the 28%...

... because there is always a hover as clue!

I'll agree that hover is available....which is a good feature...I just see a minor difference/distinction between a user selected "generic" name, like MUSIC, and a program defined "generic" name, like SR...as the user selected name gives more of a clue to contents than the system selected name when the contents are changed by user action.

But hey, I'm not here to argue and cause conflict...I'm really a nice guy who, based on 25+ yrs of corporate life as programmer/analyst, just has some different ideas and viewpoints...

Hey! :D This was a nice discussion, so let's revive it! Maybe there's a late satisfaction for j_c_hallgren...

The good old "Search Results" ... I recently asked myself (inspired by a user email -- tnx cajhin!) why I haven't done it much more simple and usable!

With the current way there are some problems:
(1) "Search Results" as a caption does not tell you anything interesting since the tab's icon says it already. I want to know the search location! Currently you have to hover the tab header to see it. BAD!
(2) When you unlock the tab and then use it for browsing, you still have "Search Results" as the name. What a nonsense! (Hey, j_c_hallgren!). BAD!
(3) The "Search Results" tab is auto-locked on creation. But maybe I don't want it locked. Just do a quick search and close it again without being prompted ("This tab is locked blah blah...")! BAD!

These problems can all be avoided I think. Let me propose a much easier and better way. Here are the new 3 options in Find Files / Options:

(a) current tab
(b) new tab
(c) search results tab (tooltip: "Re-use any existing search results tab (first from left), else open new tab.")

Now with option (c):
The search results tab will show the actual search location in the caption, not the dumbo-term "Search results".
The search results tab will not be auto-locked on creation. If you want it locked, then lock it and it will stay like that forever. Less unwanted smartness, more control for you.

Have I overlooked anything? Why haven't I done it like this right away? :?

:o What a surprise! This topic revived! Anyway, my only question is: Will the SR tab title show the existing tooltip value? So it will still be prefixed with "Search:", right?
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Well, yeah! I do have more than one Finding tabs, and one of them is called "Search results" and is the one I want to be used when I check that option. And it is not always the left-most one, and I don't want it to be.
And what if that left-most one is locked, with some other Search filters/options defined, would I loose them all?? No thanks.

You want to change this, ok fine. Then use the tab ID & store it somewhere (like default tab), and use a nice little icon overlay to let us know which it is, regardless of its title/position/whatever

(1) "Search Results" is bad, I want to know search location
> with the "Default Finding Tab" you would. And still easilly know which tab will be used with its icon overlay

(2) When you unlock the tab and then use it for browsing, you still have "Search Results" as the name. What a nonsense!
> Hell no!! Nonsense yourself! :P This IS how tab title works people. Go to App Folder and rename the tab "XY Folder" then move away, that tab's title is what?? That's right, still "XY Folder" !! Not a nonsense, that's how it's supposed to be, that's how title work!
Anyways, using the id & icon overlay, no more title unless you want to use one, which could be, or not, "Search results"

(3) The "Search Results" tab is auto-locked on creation.
> Well, with this option either you disable that option is there are no Default Finding Tab, or you create a new tab and give it the DFT state. Which would be only that, not a locked state. (Warning: means the tab used to show SR could be in browsing mode before you start the search...)

Only if I prefix it. But why should I? Just takes away space.

Default Finding Tab... or default search results tab... that's a possibility, too.

(a) current tab
(b) new tab
(c) default search results tab

Icon Overlay would be nice. However, you cannot put any number of concurrent overlays on one icon without have them cover each other. So I would probably have to make a rule: default tab and default search results tab must be different. Or: make a special hermaphrodite overlay

BTW: all this won't happen before ver 6.1, so there's time to relax, drink a tea and meditate... 8)

Why? Because some folks (including me  ) may not know or always immediately recognize that tab by the icon only...and when I only have 3-4 tabs open, space is not a problem! And if that tab becomes very narrow, then maybe you could change prefix to "SR:", but otherwise have it be "Search:"?

With options "Current tab" and "New tab" there's no "Search:" either. So this would rather be a general option about how the caption of SR tabs should look.
In 6.1 I will also redesign the configuration window: navigation wil be easier and there will be more (unlimited!) space for tiny little options...

My concern is not with those who use Current or New options, but people like me who almost always use SR tab option...and is mainly because on rare occasions, I close the SR tab, and desire/want to have a hard-to-miss value in tab header as to which type of tab it is: SR or other
The current "Search results" value makes it quite hard to miss!
