Thanks for the possible workaround, but I don't think I am up for that. Not because it's too much effort -- it isn't. But simply because I expect XYplorer to provide a mechanism for this. There was one -- in the form of "IconResource" tweak -- but it has been removed to make way for a tweak to load a stand-alone icon file. If bringing it back isn't too much effort then I'll be a happy bunny.

I found
this thread. If I understand it correctly, XYplorer.exe used to have two icons embedded which were selectable via the IconResource tweak you mention. You'd want this second icon (the original orange one presumably) included in XYplorer.exe and selectable via the IconResource tweak?

@zer0: Did you try choosing the second icon from XYplorer.exe? I have mentioned it
below.

Correct.
No, I did not. Firstly, because XYplorer isn't set to start when Windows loads. Secondly, because XYplorer.exe doesn't contain the old-school orange icon any more, so I wouldn't be able to choose it anyway.

Yes, stupid me. One more thing, i dont use XY installer but simply unzip to C:\Program files (86)\XYplorer. Could installer be the problem for you?

Yes, I think it is. It all seems very peculiar. On one hand, if one installs XYplorer but its EXE file doesn't contain the old-school icon, an icon from the Start menu group is used and overrides the tweak for stand-alone icon. But, if one uses the no-install package, all is kosher.

OK, so it was the installer then. Good to know.

As I understand it, the setup program (re)creates the shortcut for XYplorer.exe, in the process overwriting any customization(s) made to the shortcut.

That's right. It still a mystery why no-install reads the icon tweak successfully whereas the installed version does not

I'm losing the plot again: I thought that after correcting the tweak in XYplorer.ini, the tweak was working now for all three types of icons (taskbar, Aero peek, title bar) but that the taskbar icon had to be manually changed after each installation of a new version of XYplorer?

Almost. Tweak correction only fixed the Aero peek and title bar icon. The taskbar icon was changed manually and will need changing manually after each installation.
Alternative ICOs integrated into .exe

...I was trying to launch different instances with different icons and I'd like to ask for 3 or 4 versions of .icos, built inside .exe - the "white bull" and the "coat of arms" versions, plus the old standard orange machine, besides the current one, what about?
I know of .ini tweaks and external apps approach, but I don't like the idea of messing an .exe with another tool, and what I intend is to have different versions of XY working with different .ini.
Noticed the glitch with Aero (7) after working flawlessly for time just to discover Win7 being unable to show regular icon on desktop out of a version but showing ok another XY version's icon. Don't look at me, it's a brand-new installation almost completely untouched...
If this could be implemented, I'd like to suggest the current model applied for the other icons also: two versions each, being one the 256 "Vista compatible". That makes room for similar future workarounds if needed... Who knows what surprises M$ have at hand for us? (bleargh!)

Sorry, but not interested. I think it is already very unusual that I allowed the user to change the app icon. One day I might take this back. This touches CI (corporate identity) at a vital point.
