Agreed. Back on track. In Windows 7 - I was freezing by the minute when browsing network shares. In Vista 64 SP2...XY is so solid it's like it was built into the OS. I cannot get a single glitch to occur - so I am convinced it's a "7" condition.....

Looks like. But if WE has no issues it's also an XY condition. I wonder what they changed from Vista SP2 to Win7. All I heard is that it wasn't much more than the name.

Do you also get a freeze when you rename a file in the list using simple inline rename?

Remember that those freezes aren't 100% of the time, only about 60-75% of the time.

But speaking about changes to Win 7, how is your upgrade to Win 7 going?

I was. Yes. That and right clicking on a folder on both the local drive and/or a network folder. Both would kill my XY...sometime to the point of having to restart the box. For me - this sort of thing was Windows 7 only.

That's a good point. I *think* this is a Win 7 issue, but if I have a network share mapped, and the remote machine goes offline, simply doing a refresh in XY locks it up permanently. As in, I can't even terminate the process. I can load another instance, but it usually locks up shortly afterwards as well - especially if it tries to read off the invalid remote share. Right clicking the remote share in an attempt to disconnect it causes a permanent lock up as well.

Under those circumstances, I can't even disconnect the drive - not even in Windows Explorer. Windows Explorer ends up locking as well. I have no recourse but to reboot the machine.


Since this might be related, I thought I'd mention it - but I think the root issue with this particular symptom is a Win 7 issue. However, that doesn't mean that Don couldn't find a way to make XY stay responsive and recoverable.

Have either of you tried running Process Monitor during these freezes to see what if anything XY is actually doing?

If even a refresh locks the app, then it's more or less one single API that's at work here: FindFirstFile. An extremely basic call, easily the most important call in any file manager. It's not to be expected that this call has general problems on Win7. There are more unknowns at work here...

I was so annoyed with this (and several other Win 7 symptoms) that I dropped Win7 and returned to Vista. However - while I didn't check Process Monitor while this was going on...I do distinctly remember checking Task Manager...and XY was pinning the meters...trying to do something....eventually the entire box became non responsive and in a couple of extreme cases...could not be shut down via the close button, End Process or anything...I had to hit the reset to get out of that nasty loop.....
