Moving files doesn't seem to impact, at least not for a noticeable length of time. It always seems to be folder operations. It doesn't seem to be dependent on the size of the folder or the number of files in it. I created a new folder and renamed it, and XYplorer went not responding.
Is your tree extremely large?
Are you using Mini Tree (or not, ie Maxi Tree)?
Still waiting for answers...

... but in the meantime I found something that could be the cause of that "Not Responding" and removed it. Check next beta... (v14.80.0218)

Okie dokie Don...
I did a "Back up app data folder" then COMPLETELY uninstalled xyplorer (even used Revo). Then I installed the latest stable version (14.80.0200) and put my registration key in. It's definitely back to its default state. Other than changing the toolbar buttons and bookmarking a couple folders, I plan to run it in its out-of-the-box state for a while, to see if I get any of the above mentioned slow-downs or GUI-no-shows. If not, I'll assume that it was one (or a combination) of my many customizations, and will systematically reintroduce them.

If you want me to activate "error logging" or whatever, it might make sense to do it now.
Otherwise I'll just try to keep track of what/why/when/where/how any problems pop up.... :D

babam, your posts are so short and devoid of information that they're annoying. We're not mind readers; you have to tell us useful information like the version of XYplorer, the operating system, what you are doing with XYplorer when this happens.

And, for the record, Windows Explorer does sometimes hang. Perhaps there are situations where XYplorer will do this and WE will not; people above have started to fill in details on this. If you want an answer from your peers here on this forum - we're not paid employees, we're users just like you - then you can start by showing us more courtesy, and more information.

In a similar vein to the title of this thread...

What is (could be) the bottleneck to a large number (250+, if that qualifies as large) of sequential "rename s" scripting ops in a particular UDC that can lead to XY temporarily going into a "Not Responding" state? XY internals? Disk speed? It doesn't happen often, but it does happen sometimes.

"sometimes" -- that usually points to Windows.

While possible, it's an easy way to fob off a potential issue. I will try to do some more experimentation.
