::fresh

Worked

Thanks for the tip!

I will advise on performance.

Thank you. Yes, I have excluded XYplorer from antivirus. I even see this issue if I completely disable antivirus.

Of note: I access network drives through a VPN on the system where I am testing XYplorer. These drives navigate and transfer fairly quickly when using native Windows explorer windows. On a fresh restart of a computer - before the network drives are connected - XYplorer refresh is extremely fast. But once I connect the VPN and attach the drives, XYplorer refreshes slow down.

The issue appears to vary with the speed and stability of my network connection. If I am on a very fast, wired connection, refresh completes in 2-4 seconds with the network drives attached. If I am on a slower, somewhat unreliable wi-fi connection, refresh can take up to 4 minutes and will cause XYplorer to go "not responding."

Ultimately, when working in XYplorer, I only want the location I am working on to refresh (contextual refresh), so if it's trying to refresh many other locations in the background, that's not what I as a user would expect. Also, I would expect that the app doesn't become unresponsive during a refresh, in any case, even if network drives take a long time to scan.

Is that an auto-refresh, or a manually triggered refresh?

If the latter: note that Ctrl+F5 will refresh the List only (not the Tree).

The auto-refreshes seem to exhibit the worst performance (for example, immediately after a file transfer from L pane to R pane) although manual F5 is also fairly slow.

If I disconnect the VPN (and thus the network drives), auto-refresh is very quick. So it's definitely the scan of the remote drives that's correlated with this issue.

Ctrl+F5 is definitely much, much quicker.

Please see my edit on my previous post for additional info re: network drives.

If you use Auto-Refresh then I recommend you untick this:
Configuration | Refresh, Icons, History | Auto-Refresh | Include network locations

The next beta version will bring some speed improvements.

Ctrl+F5 is definitely much, much quicker.
And it would be hugely convenient if this could be attached to "double-click on white space".

Anybody. e.g. xyplorerköln, noted the speed up?

Okidoki.

I installed that beta version. It seems pretty snappy. I also did the white-space refresh tweak. I will get back after a few days of use. Thank you for the update.

Also, that ::fresh test did not seem to make any difference.

Thank you for the quick followup.

The beta version 16.20.0302 does not seem to be significantly faster (if at all) at refreshing in my use case. I will test some more, but it seems about the same.

OK, so after continued testing, I conclude that this issue is not improved.

Here's one scenario where the freezing/not-responding constantly occurs: I have a Windows 10 machine, with 3 locally-attached (via USB) 2TB drives and 5 remotely attached (via VPN/mapping) 250GB drives.

Let's say that in the left XYplorer pane, I navigate to a directory on one of the remote drives. In the right pane, I navigate to a directory on one of the local drives. I copy a small file, such as a Word document, from the left pane to the right pane. The copy successfully completes, and then XYplorer freezes for 20 seconds - 1 minute, "Not Responding". Eventually it will unfreeze and refresh, showing the file as copied to the right pane.

This is true even if, while Auto-refresh is on (checked), I disable (uncheck):
- Include network locations
- Include removable drives
- Refresh during file operations

The only way I have found to prevent the lengthy freezing/not-responding is to completely disable Auto-Refresh. Then, XYplorer is immediately responsive after file operations, but the Auto-Refresh features of course don't work.

If I use native Windows Explorer, file operations and drive directory refreshes are near-instantaneous. I'm on a fast connection and there's no obvious slowdown via the VPN. So clearly the hangs are related to something XYplorer itself is doing.

Is there any way to rectify the Auto-Refresh features so that they don't hang XYplorer in a scenario like the one described?

OK, thanks for the report. I currently don't know if I can do anything. The Auto-Refresh is working fine for years now for the vast majority of customers. Countless things (other than XY) could be causing this issue on your system.
