30 minutes ago the "MS Mouse and Keyboard center" (or so) popped up magically and offered me options to configure my wheel button. Wow. So, thanks again, but no more need for AHK.highend wrote:Try one of these compiled .exes...

Re: OT: Win 8.1
You really use a manufacturer driver for your mouse? oO
The logitech crap didn't allow it's users to configure the 4th button as a doubleclick for so long... Hence the reason I switched to XMouseButton...

Works perfectly. As long as you stay as far away from logitech as possible everything is fine.

Re: OT: Win 8.1
Unfortunately the best (at least the best at an affordable price) trackballs are from Logitech...
But the software is just a shitload of crap... No way that I'll ever install something like that again...

Re: OT: Win 8.1
I like the quality and feel of most Logitech mice over anything else. Though the software does seems to be getting worse over the years. Has anyone noticed the "Logitech Download Assistant " it installs as a driver? I believe it's associated with the USB transmitter used or something more nefarious? Normally it wouldn't be an issue, but on my laptop it actually prevents me from disabling and then re-enabling the USB HUB which on my desktop allows me in a script (using USBSDLM) to re-enable a external hard drive or flash drive after it's been safely removed (without physical removal). I did find that USB Safely Remove at http://safelyremove.com/fullFeaturesList.htm is able to get around that problem.

I think the only thing worse than Logitech's mouse/keyboard software is Harmony Remote software, also from Logitech.
I like their hardware, their drivers seem to work well enough, heck the actual software mostly gets the job done, but what a terrible user experience!

Re: OT: Win 8.1
Worse? Is that even possible?... I own a Harmony remote control but as long as you don't change your TV's, receivers, etc. that much... I had to only use it twice (in the last 2 years). Such software is installed to a virtual machine instead of a physical oneI think the only thing worse than Logitech's mouse/keyboard software is Harmony Remote software
Uninstalling the driver / or only disabling the service doesn't help?Normally it wouldn't be an issue, but on my laptop it actually prevents me
Their mice / trackball driver didn't let the user configure the thumb button (for the devices that had one) as a doubleclick for so many years... Regardless how many user wanted this "feature"...
As long as I use an input device that doesn't have more than 5 (including wheel click) micro-switches I'll never install their crap again. XMouseButton takes care of my needs (no I'm not affiliated with the programmer in any way, it's just a wonderful tool).

Re: OT: Win 8.1
I have the Logitech Anywhere mouse for my laptop which I like very much (I hate using track pads). It does work flawlessly anwhere...on my leg on a rug. What gets me is, I never installed any Logitech software for it. It worked fine without it. Somehow Windows snuck in the "Logitech Download Assistant" on me. Maybe it did it automatically even though I didn't install any Logitech software when I installed the mouse and didn't realize it. Yes, I do normally screen the updates and do not have automatic download and installation selected. Yes, I should try to disable the driver or remove it to see if the mouse still functions though I probably should re-enable the trackpad before I do it.

Re: OT: Win 8.1
Next question: On XP I used Acronis to regularly create clones of my system harddisk. Now, since I'm unsure if my version of Acronis is still fit for Win8, I wonder whether Win8 maybe can do it natively. I found this:
http://arstechnica.com/information-tech ... -whole-pc/
Has anybody done it with Win 8.1? Does it work?

Re: OT: Win 8.1
If the logitech software was installed through a windows update than only if you install the optional ones as well.
What are your settings in control panel - system and security - system - (left side) advanced system settings - hardware tab - hardware installation settings (bottom button)?
If you want a "perfect" solution (scriptable, fast, rock solid) buy e.g.
the special bundle at http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/index.htm
Remove the BootIt Bare Metal thing from the shopping card afterwards.
A little warning: To create a "perfect" setup you'll have to spend a bit of
time to customize things the way you like them. But e.g. IfW really works
out of the box and creating a recovery cd is a matter of clicking through
a wizard...

It does work but it also takes a lot of time. Nothing I'd recommend...Has anybody done it with Win 8.1? Does it work?

TeraByte looks nice but any better than Acronis?

Acronis was perfect for me. No thinking necessary (I have no time for this
), just pressed a button and 2.5 hours later I got a perfect bootable clone.

2013 Home works flawlessly* (disk as well as file/folders). With my SSD (Jehova!) a full system clone (40 GB) including verification takes < 30 min.admin wrote:Acronis was perfect for me. *: Now, even after restoring the clone Acronis still has that version in its backup history.
