Re: Paper Folders
I think it's more useful as it is now.
Hm, cannot repro the wrong preselection.

Re: Paper Folders
The Breadcrumb bar is kind of a mess if you are browsing a Paper Folder outside of <xypaper>.
My opinion is that clicking 'paper:' should take the user to the folder containing the Paper Folder - which will typically be '<xypaper>' but could be 'C:\Example' if the current location is 'paper:C:\Example\files.txt'.
But I'm at a loss for what the arrow following 'paper:' should do in that case. I want to say it should list all the Paper Folders in that directory (the current PF's siblings) but the problem there is the use of the generic '.txt' extension and flexibility. Meaning it would really have to show all files within the folder, or at least all '.txt' files.
Though for consistency it might be better to have it behave more like a normal folder and thus list folders contained within the loaded PF.

Re: Paper Folders
After all, you would already see the PFs in the List, no need to have them in the dropdown too.TheQwerty wrote:Though for consistency it might be better to have it behave more like a normal folder and thus list folders contained within the loaded PF.
And I agree, clicking on paper: should bring you to <xypaper>

Re: Paper Folders
This is kind of what I'm thinking as it keeps it consistent with normal folders...
Ex. 1: paper:pf
PF's path: <xypaper>\pf.txt
Breadcrumbs: > paper: > pf
Actions:
> - Computer, Drives, etc.
paper: - Go to <xypaper>
> - List folders in <xypaper>
Ex. 2: paper:a\pf
PF's path: <xypaper>\a\pf.txt
Breadcrumbs: > paper: > a > pf
Actions:
> - Computer, Drives, etc.
paper: - Go to <xypaper>
> - List folders in <xypaper>
a - Go to <xypaper>\a
> - List folders in <xypaper>\a
pf - Nothing
Ex. 3: paper:C:\a\pf.txt
PF's path: C:\a\pf.txt
Breadcrumbs: > paper: > pf
Actions:
> - Computer, Drives, etc.
paper: - Go to C:\a
> - List folders in C:\a
pf - Nothing
Now the problem is the 'List folders in...' items, since it might be more desirable to change those to 'List paper folders in...'. The problem again though is there's no way to identify a paper folder file, so that would need to either display all txt files or all files making it less useful (at least when outside of <xypaper>).
That's where I'm stuck.
This is one of those times I wish there were better support for what I'll now call "Cascading Extensions".
This is the idea that a file might be named: "file.pf.txt"
It's primarily a text file, but the secondary extension ('pf') tells us its more specifically a 'paper folder'.
Other examples:
'file.cc.xys' - An XYplorer Script File, for a custom column.
'file.lib.xys' - An XYplorer Script File, that is a library of scripts.
'file.moviePoster.jpg' - An image file that is a movie poster.
'file.eb.pdf' - PDF that is an e-book.
I realize we can already do this but it can be a bit painful because no tools that I'm aware of actually supports the full logic and thus they only ever care and work with the primary generic extension.

>Two weeks ago, I started to create a list of mission critical documents as a plain local text file of full qualified file paths In my new project. After PFs had emerged it was really nice to see that I simply could load this file as a folder into XY. Even better, today I've moved the PF definition to the project team's drive so that everybody can append his own document paths - whereas I can preserve the best and most useful view on it.
Not bad, not bad - cool stuff.

Since PF are rather perfecty integrated into XY, I sometimes wish to have a slightly stronger visual clue though. Just a quick think: is it possible to give PFs some individual color options, e.g. list pane background or something similar/related?
And just one more thing: one fine day, I would like to build up cascaded PFs.
Cheers,
Filehero

Re: Paper Folders
I was originally thinking of giving them their own "Warning Bar", like QS and VF. But then I did not really know what to write into that bar...
But IMO yes, I should do this in phase 2.

"Attention, don't get fooled!", or, for a start, simply "Paper Folder"?admin wrote:But then I did not really know what to write into that bar...
Re: Paper Folders
to have something similar to "Thumbs back color" would be cool.!Filehero wrote:Since PF are rather perfecty integrated into XY, I sometimes wish to have a slightly stronger visual clue though. Re: Paper Folders
For some reason, I was thinking perhaps a translucent paper icon in the background of the list to indicate it's a paper folder?
