Restore can mean several things: it may mean there's a recovery partition which restores the image at the time of the computer's manufacture, although often a post-install wizard is then shown which allows user customisation, including user accounts. As factory images inevitably have crapware installed, there's already a user account in place, however.

It's a Samsung so yeah a fair bit of crapware but not as bad as some.

The restore is from a factory restore partition, I've only ever done this once and can't remember if I could set the User Name or not. From what the seller told me it looks like the option is not there or not obvious. But if what you say about the post install wizard not always being offered then I guess the only way to find out is to do it.

I think I've hit a problem with my masterplan of including XYP (portable) in the synchronized folders so I can have exactly the same instance of XYP on any of my synchronized machines.

I set up XYP on my desktop which has a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080. The laptop I synchronize it with has a resolution of 1378 x 768. When I open XYP on the laptop the vertical resolution is fine but it is trying to display 1080p horizontaly so consequently I can only see the left hand two thirds of what was on the 1080p display. So I see the Tree, Catalog and Search OK but the left hand pane is wide and I can only see half of the right hand pane.

Should this happen with the portable version or is it something to do with synchronization as it seems to me that having XYP in a synchronized folder or on a flash drive should be no different.

It's likely I'm missing something obvious.

Ultimately if I have to have unsynchronized XYP it's not a major problem especially when I have got it set up how I want it, but it would be good it I could.

Do you mean that XYplorer is maximised on the smaller laptop screen but with the Tree-/Catalog-pane too wide, or that XYplorer isn't maximised on the laptop screen but (tries to) show a restored (not maximised), too wide window?

The latter could be solved by setting Configuration > Startup & Exit > Startup window state, to maximized. The former would require some XYplorer.ini-hackery on startup, either by a XYplorer-script which would modify settings if necessary, save them and then restart, or by an external script (e.g. VBScript) which would change XYplorer.ini and only then start XYplorer.

BTW, the Subst-workaround doesn't work for you?

Click on a picture, when it opens bigger then hover the mouse over and click "Zoom" "Original size" this will display the pic at native resolution.

You're obviously a knowlegable tinkerer (and helpful too) so you could set up a free DropBox or SugarSync account, download the portable trial of XYP and play.

But I guess that might backfire as we may not see you on the forum for a while.

I think this an interesting thread as it exposes the problems of using a single configuration on multiple, disparate computers. Having said that, I went a different way: even on a laptop with a relatively small HD, I have a separate data partition which mirrors the one on my desktop (something Subst should enable you to emulate). For XYplorer, I do keep distinct configurations, but given that I seldom change settings (I don't save state on exit, but keep five tabs open at the top of working folder structures) it's not too onerous to keep settings in sync.

Going from a high to a lower resolution and with the dual pane-splitter stored as an absolute value, I'd say so.

Ah I see. It sets itself up for the machine it's first used on and the the width setting is not refered to again in dual pane mode. But strangely it is in single pane mode.

I've got to say my "dream" setting is looking further and further away. Oh well will just have to sort out what I want XYP to do and then set it up on both machines independantly, unless Don sees any merit in my "dream" which I'm inclined to think he doesn't.

Will let you know how I get on with subst when I get chance.

nas8e9 already mentioned this, with some xy scripting this can definitely be done.

1) You need a list of ini values that are unique to the two PCs, for example WinW, WinH, SplitPos etc.
2) Use a xy script at startup to write those to ini file, followed by auto-start (probably from run or cmd).

That sounds straightforward so OK I'll start looking at scripting, sounds like fun and a complete time soak. At the moment I'm getting ready for the Christmas rush so don't have a lot of spare time but this could be a good bit of R & R.

Will update this post when I've got somewhere with the scripting (or more likely when I haven't and need guidance.

Thanks serendipity & nas8e9 for your time & thoughts and if you have any more please post them.

As a simple example i tried this script and works:
call it for eg. start.xys and save it in XY's script folder. Then, put this switch in your xyplorer shortcut towards the end: When XY starts it will read the computer name and set the relevant ini value (in this case dual pane's splitter position) and restart XY.
Note: I put the switch "/win=min" in the shortcut so that you won't notice the first XY startup, on restart XY starts normally (depending on your startup setting)

I myself use XY over dropbox 24x7 but the contents are very different and hence use different configs. This was a good exercise for myself if i one day have a setup like yours.
