Actually, I had planned a "Comments" column since years! It would simply use the invisible stream that's accompanying each file on an NTFS file system. This is quite easy to accomplish on XP, but unfortunately Vista has made it impossible AFAIK for security aspects (this OS is sold mainly on the concept of "paranoia" instead of "usability") -- so I have put it on the "long list".

You are quick.

Ok, I have understood the comments difficulty.

But why don't you use a tab separated file instead?
If the user moves his files out of XYplorer he should know he's doing bad.

Naah, somehow I don't like this concept. It leaves files everywhere you go. Defeats portability.

A rather wait for "Windows 7" and hope stream support is back then.

I don't like it either.

But Windows already does this with sort of thing, having Desktop.ini and Thumbs.db.

Just another proof that it's no good!

*BUMP*. Based on what you once said above, any hopes of writing your own custom column? I surely won't use Vista's 250+ columns but I think having a user defined column like comments/tags column will be quite handy for custom sorting.

How many files would you comment? 100, 1000, ... 1,000,000? Just to give me an idea for a possible implementation...

Actually, yesterday i was trying to sort something and there was no sort rule available to sort sort them my way. If there was a column where users could add a small comment or tag, then sorting items by those comments would make life easier.

I understand that with drop stack one can rearrange list items manually, but for 1000s of items that would be damn tiring. So there should be some automatic way to do it.

I was thinking about having a text field in properties tab where user can enter a short comment for the selected files and it immediately shows up in the comments column for sorting.

Well if we have such a thing, I'm sure it'll be (also) possible to use scripting to set said comments/tags/etc. to many items at once.

I myself would really like such an extra column "Comments" as well, I already did myself smthg like that through scripting, but of course there's no way to have it shown on List, or use it to sort. I use it for hundreds of items, though mostly located inside a few selected folders, so I would only show that extra column on those few folders (thanks to FVS).

Wow, you are far ahead of us when it comes to scripting (or anything to do with XY). Well, now we have the two fools rule. :D

I could see where I'd make use of this also! Even if it were limited to 25 or so chars would be quite helpful, IMO. Just enough to put a quick 'tag' on it, like "orig" or "work", etc.

 Far ahead? He's way past Don on scripting, it seems! And now I'm the 3rd 'fool'!

As it happens I'm working on some surprisingly cool feature this week (not on the roadmap!) and it widely opens the door to such comment thing and a little more. Patience... (It's my warm up excercise for dual pane... )

@Don: I can't thank you enough for the Tag and Comment columns. Its makes a beautiful poem out of the messy scattered folders and files. And with searching included its a song!

Long shall be praised a day when additional columns could be added based on feeds of data from the property scripting command 8) That will put much more metadata at people's fingertips ;)
