Obviously this functionality deserves a prominent position on Don's ToDo-List, I would say.
It seems - as tag.mania says - that a solution which would encompass both worlds (centralized or selectable explicit tag.dat, as well as tag.dat per folder) would be unbeatable and support a massive long term "investment" in tagging of all possible things. But it would not be easy to implement, I am afraid (think for example about the danger of two or more instances editing the same tag.dat file concurrently).
If XYplorer would remain sufficiently fast with thousands of files tagged, well... then Don will be as happy as his tagging users.
