I'm not running any of these resource-wasters and am seeing delays in some cases.

If we are to talk about how the disk load of other processes influence the performance of XYplorer, then let us first start out with a reproducible case and next use tools to look at number of reads and bytes read before and after, as well as the disk queue.

Both sysinternals and win 7 resource monitor can be used.

Ditto on Vegard.
Most of the time I am in a clean environment, being Firefox the only memory hog.

Well, everyone I know does.

I don't know either of course, but it's one of the best AVs, and it's free, so I would assume that many people use it.

I don't know the market share figures, but I've seen it recommended by people like Paul Thurrot, Fred Langa, Ed Bott and Dwight Silverman. Combined with the price being right (free), I suspect a sizable number of people use it.

Taking it broader, would it be an idea to recommend excluding XYplorer.exe and XYcopy.exe for all virus scanners? The reports so far mention MSE as well as Sophos, so chances are other scanners cause significant slowdown as well. jv16 PowerTools is one program I know which recommends excluding itself on install/first run.

While I like and try to get the best speed out of my operations, my number one design goal is a totally different story: Get work done more quickly. I'm not talking about seconds here but about hours, which can be saved using a smart and well thought out app like XY.

Well I may as well throw this out here, as I am trying to find a good screen capture tool which lets me record things in preferably GIF or AVI.

This way I could show what I do, and what performance measuring tools reports.

Any recommendations for a preferably free tool?

Would it be an idea given the current forum experiences, to add something to the FAQ with regard to MSE? Should other anti-virus packages get a lot of reports (so far I've seen only one forum report each about Sophos and Kaspersky), the FAQ entry could get expanded. Also, based on j_c_hallgren's reference, enabling generic icons could be offered as a suggestion for better performance with ant-virus enabled (either in this specific FAQ or elsewhere).

XYplorer didn't cause it and shouldn't be responsible for solving/alleviating it, you mean? Can't argue with that, but end users have the annoying habit of only seeing the combined end result.

I'd like a clarification as to why this program sets itself a goal as to be slower than the standard tool.

I have a suggestion. Can a thread be started under "Tips & Tricks..." (a sticky so it stays at the top of the list) that contains setup suggestions? Suggestions like "add XY to anti-virus exception list to prevent AV slowdowns" would be very helpful when someone is first installing XY. It could be just for things that affect everyone. There may be other tips, such as for network configuration, that users should be aware that can affect performance. Also for troubleshooting tips. For example, Don, and others, are repeatedly taking time to respond to issues and problems and suggesting that XY be started from a temp folder to see if there's a configuration problem. If it were in a thread that people would first refer to, maybe even in the XY help menu, it would save everyone a lot of time. Then if they did have to post a question, they would have already performed the basic steps.

It can also eliminate a lot of frustration for many who don't bother to complain on the forum and therefore don't find a solution. I don't know how many sales come from referrals and recommendations, but the happier the users are, the more they will recommend XY.

But how? My experience is that the FAQ is near invisible. And all other parts of the website are even more invisible.

Mention it in the installer and or in the download section. In bold colour!

I have had this problem for quite a while. After reading the posts in this thread, I used Process Explorer to monitor CPU usage during access to one of the directories containing many executables, always slow to load. The monitor program shows what process is using how much CPU at any given point.

It did this on a couple of systems (running XP). In both cases, the process that was hogging the CPU was one just called "System". Both these boxes use a virus program called Trend Micro OfficeScan. I have seen virus-scanner delays before one these boxes, and there are different programs involved.

This "System" module seems to be a low-level Windows program unrelated to virus checking.

I, too, would like to see a resolution to this. It's the one kink that keeps on kinking.
