I just tested it, and no, it doesn't make any difference. Sometimes XY works properly, but 75% of the time, the freezing issue exists.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64. And I'm working off of a drive mapped to a remote share on another workstation in the same domain (running XP). It's the same machine I worked with while my own machine was running XP, and I didn't have this issue.

Identical experience over here - but ONLY when I moved to Windows 7 32 bit for about 2 weeks (other issues besides this one caused it's demise over here)...and - without changing anything else (network shares, other machines, my own hardware)...I reinstalled Vista 64 SP2...and XY is as fast as it could possibly be...I have not experienced a single glitch since moving back about 10 days ago.
And to address Admin: I use XY exclusively for ALL file ops. Vista Explorer may get opened one a week to get to "My Pictures", My Videos etc..which begs the question:
Q: How come XY doesn't put these "special" shares on the tree whereas My Documents appears auto magically? Or am I missing a setting somewhere?
Cheers!

Under XP they are subfolders of My Documents. Is that different under V/7?

Oh yes...totally different. They are all separate folders in V/7 under:
C:\Users\*Username*
If something could be done in XY to facilitate choosing which of these special folders appear in the tree - that would be fab.
It sorta looks like you are half way there with Favorites->Special System Folders...except for the fact that some are missing (dependent upon OS) and there is no way to have them show on the tree....
I guess one could add these locations to the Catalog etc...or as Favorites?
Cheers!

I don't fully understand yet. C:\Users\*Username* is a real path (this should work of course in XY). But they are shown directly under MyComputer in the V/7 tree? You have a screenshot?

Actually, no, they're not in the root of the tree in Win 7. They're under "Libraries". It's just that "Libraries" is expanded by default when you use Windows Explorer.

Oh, now that's another thing. I'm aware of win7 libraries. It's on my list. I thought we are talking about "special folders" that are shown right under MyComputer and can be addressed using a short form like "Desktop\stuff\"...

No - I didn't say there were stored under My Computer in Vista/7 explorer. In the screencap - you can see the User folder stands alone and ABOVE My Computer in the tree...expanding it - shows all the other subfolders in there.
Seems that XY is sadly stuck back in the XP paradigm - where My Computer was the top level. In Vista/7 - the DESKTOP is the top level and everything falls under that.
For consistency - you should consider updating your "tree" layout - dependant of course on what OS is in place...a Windows XP user should get the current tree order and those of us choosing Vista/7 should get the default tree "folders" layout from those OS's.
As mentioned earlier in this thread - I still have to visit Vista Explorer (and I wish I didn't have to) since it's tree style is what I am used to when going for my user folders. Sure I can monkey around and add them all to Favs in XY...but the workflow is not the same...I really would like to just fire up XY...go to the top of tree -(like I do now in Vista Explorer) and do my thing.
XY should at least show my user folder at the top of it's tree or least allow more than just My Documents to be placed there....
Just a thought....
Cheers!

For what it's worth, that never bothered me.
Long before I would implement this, I would rather have special items be *able* to appear in XY - such as when you plug in an MP3 player, and it's browseable by Windows Explorer, but doesn't even show up in XY.

No, also WE XP and every other file manager I've seen has DESKTOP at top level. I deliberately decided in version 1.0 of XYplorer (then called "Tracker") that I prefer My Computer on top, and up to now (> 10 years later) I've heard little complaints...
I will see what I can do about this user folder... the question is what will happen under XP where this is not an expected folder in that place... I don't want to import any Vista stuff into XP contexts.
Generally I believe that I do not necessarily have to mirror the proliferation of special folders in recent Windows, which is an abstraction of MS over NTFS meant to attract a new class of customers, in my file manager.

You get none from me.

I agree, with certain exceptions - like device browsing, which was mentioned earlier. The idea is to not need Windows Explorer for anything, at least for me.

Not complaining - just asking if I can "see" the tree in XY - the same way as the rest of the world sees it in Explorer (be it Vista, XP or whatever) . You have to agree that millions of us - after years of use of constant usage - are programmed to see the "tree" concept in a specific way. That you deliberately "decided" to move My Computer to the top is one of the reasons we are now talking about it...if XY is to truly become the defacto standard and COMPLETE replacement for Explorer - it should at least offer the option to display the tree (and requisite elements) with a solid nod to the original, standard element positioning - IF and only IF the user desires that.
To be honest - your deliberate moves on some of this stuff frankly annoys me - since I have to relearn things almost daily. But - hey that's just me. XY offers so much more cool stuff that I can get past the annoying parts - but I still wish XY would afford me the ability to never EVER open Vista Explorer again - and keep my standard workflows intact.

Thanks! Appreciate the effort....
admin wrote: Generally I believe that I do not necessarily have to mirror the proliferation of special folders in recent Windows, which is an abstraction of MS over NTFS meant to attract a new class of customers, in my file manager.
However - some may just love the fact that XY "mirrors" the major traits (not all of them of course) of Explorer - just for that feeling of "Hey - this thing has all my stuff where I expect to see it - AND it does all this other cool stuff!" And of course - if XY does it all and looks the part - my requirement for never having to deal with Explorer is done.
If you wanna really kick Explorer to the curb - you need to ensure your bases are covered. Or at least offer a system option or two for the big stuff like "Display Vista/Windows 7 Special Folders on Tree" or "Make Desktop the top level of the tree".
And my ultimate wish - offer an option to allow XY override the Window keyboard shortcut (Windows Key + E) = Launch XY
If have been using this for ions to launch Explorer....would be nice to see XY pop up instead of re-learning another shortcut....
Keep up the great work...
Cheers!

This thread is starting to stray off topic

I want XYplorer to completely replace Explorer as much as the next guy, but let's please keep discussion of such to other threads/forums
