Yes, as a touchpad user, these can be often used...however...the advantage to folding into submenu is that the items below that now become quicker/easier to access those!
For example, getting to "Special" is now better for me due to "Duplicates" being there instead of the actual items...and...by not having the KS showing, my horizontal movement is greatly reduced also!
So if you folded "Select", then the "Find" items are closer to top...

I'm not so sure if "Special" is the best title to use for those functions...I might suggest "Utility functions" or "Other functions" or similar...
In analogy to "Rename Special" and "Paste Special": would "File Special" make any sense to you? (I don't really think so, but it's your language...)

Yes, that would be ok...it's a very minor thing but I think that would be better.

Such sub-menus has the advantage that we can reuse the accelerator keys. (in each sub you can use f.ex. &a again and again)
