If you don't like the arrows, just set the XY config option I mentioned earlier.
Yes, but this won't remove it from the desktop icons or from explorer..
Or instead of reverting just leave the 29 entry empty instead of removing it.
I checked the previous entry and it was "%windir%\\System32\\shell32.dll,-50", which I learned is "a specific resource path in Windows pointing to a completely transparent/blank icon embedded within the core system file shell32.dll".
Is the empty entry also removing the arrows?
I'll check and report back..

Leaving it blank or
%windir%\System32\imageres.dll,-17
should do what you want, but eventually it might corrupt the icon cache again (your issue) best way should be set it to a custom transparent ico file if leaving it blank doesn't work.

That was weird..
Leaving it empty produced the missing icons again, but restoring the %windir%\\System32\\shell32.dll,-50 did remove the arrows and brought back the icons.
Everything is working now, so it must have been a cache corruption after all.
Is the %windir%\System32\imageres.dll,-17 a transparent icon too?
And how a custom icon will avoid the corruption of the cache?

Yeah you would have needed to delete the cache as well as leaving it blank, I thought it might regenerate automatically when you changed it (it probs would have if you used the imageres ref), its a Win bug reading from dll resource, reading external icon doesn't happen on.

Very good info.
I'll go with the custom icon then..
Thank you.
