We're talking about the Hover Box, right? It cannot be bigger than the screen. :?

No, the images are bigger than the screen so it will produce a big enough preview.
It doesn't have to be accurate.
Just bigger than the preview size so it can block the underline thumbnails..

Again: We're talking about the Hover Box, right? (not MDBU)

Yes, of course..
If you look at the gif, you will understand better what I'm talking about.
In it, I put the mouse over an image's thumbnail, its preview opens (the preview is big enough to cover most of the other thumbnails), and then I only press the right arrow key.
I do not move the mouse myself..

I think that this is an inherent problem of this approach.
To create the hover box, the mouse must be over the thumbnail, but then the mouse is over the hover box, so no change in the preview.
It would be much easier if it just opened the next file of the directory (the way the directory is sorted of course, like F11 preview does)...

I was in 28.20.0502, but I just updated to 28.30.0100 and the behavior is exactly the same..

The focus is at the first thumbnail.
I click on it to be sure, move the mouse a little and let it rest on top of it.

Well, I cannot reproduce it anymore at the moment. I'll watch it.

:eh: I don't get it.
Did you manage to get a hover box that is covering the next thumbnails like in my example?
If you did, did the pressing of the right arrow moved the mouse over it?
If it did, did it produce a hover box of the underline, covered thumbnail?
It seems impossible to me.. :?

I sure did and it works every time. Win8 and Win11, 32 bit and 64 bit.

I use Windows 10.
So, I opened up in VMWare a Windows 11 copy I have, and copied XYplorer portable there.
Sure enough it had the same behavior, so I ruled out the OS.
Next, tried /fresh and it worked OK, also in Windows 10. It was a settings problem.
Well, that was easy. I started hunting for the culprit in settings, and sure enough I found it.
It was in Usability>Highlight Hovered Items.
If this is off, the arrows do not work.
And since I don't want to enable it, I'll wait for this to change in the future.

This is not the feature I was after, anyway.
What I wanted is an easy way to compare consecutive images, and the hover box flashes and jumps all over, so it won't do.
What I use now is the F11 preview, but it needs to leave the mouse and press the F11 every time, and this is too much if you want it for hundreds of images.
The MDBU was easier to open (right click) but there is no way to scroll through the images (to compare the current image with the next), so no luck there too.
I'll have to keep using IrfanView (just double click and wheel scroll).
It also has an option to make its window dimensions the same with the image (but only if smaller than the screen).
F11 can do that, but only for the bigger side..

Anyway, enough with my rant, mission accomplished!..

Alternatively you could make FP load on DblClick/middle click or similar too.

Bingo, Highlight Hovered Items makes the difference! :appl: Fixed in next beta.

Not here. I think. What do you mean by "flashes and jumps all over"?

PS: Okay, I get it. The next version will have a new Hover Box option: "Fixed-size image area" where all image previews fit within a fixed square area (of configurable size). This will make the size and position of the Hover Box more predictable and totally independent of the size of the original. The position of the Hover Box will still have to be flexible though to ensure visibility of the entire box.

Is the FP the File Preview (that opens default with the F11)?
That's a good idea, assuming that you could change the way it opens (but since we are talking about XYplorer 😁 )...
