I am very much against combining these.

I can see cases where I might like to use different settings for each, and I think it would be stupid to remove it now, and have us go back through the hoops of requesting it later.

What is gained by combining them is very little and could be achieved through other means.

What is gained is usability. Why offer an option that's unlikely to be useful?

And there are other ways to gain usability.

I do have a set of folders where I'd like them to remember the positions of the columns but not what is visible because it allows me to continue using the columns I currently use but place the size or modified column closer to the name than usual. Remembering the positions but not the visibility removes the annoying hassle of having to toggle the Attribute column (or others) back and forth.

Yep, this is gone. I expect soon somebody will ask for restoring the grid but inheriting line numbers and rename on dbl-click. That would quickly end up as the tree you suggested. But I want to keep it simpler than that.

Well, yeah, Slow Rename on Dbl-Click does sound more like a global setting than a per-tab one, and while it is unlikely to be changed (often) I would say, the only downside here would be one that didn't know about it, created a few FV including List Style settings, and now has to edit all of those one by one. (Not that I care so much to ask for any changes though...)

On to something else: the button "Make Default" is a nice idea, well done, but I'm not sure about that caption, as it could be confusing, people thinking it could somehow related to the Default FV, e.g. to turn this one into the default one or something. Maybe it should state more precisely what it does...

Not sure what caption would be best though... "Set Selection As Default" ??

(And yes, I know about the tooltip, but still...)

I see what you mean, but I think "Make Default" buttons are quite common so most people should know what it's about (even without the tooltip). I don't like a button with a long caption -- looks bad. Since nothing dangerous can happen here I will just leave it as it is.
