No, what I meant is: The portable version doesn't install any preview- / thumbshandler stuff to the system, that version can't be the culprit why XY displays those file formats

Yeah, I new that to be the case, but I had to go out before I could actually investigate what really is the culprit. For those interested in thumbnails, MDBU, hover box, and preview for mobi and epub.

I'm advised by a professional copy editor / proofreader, that in the case of Office-like applications, "Documents" or "Document Files" would include all formats which can be used by the application. So spreadsheet (Excel) and presentation (Power Point) files would also be considered "Documents" or Document Files."

It's been way too long since I installed it. Maybe something else is at work here. The exec file is named, "calibre-portable.exe" in a Calibre Portable folder.
I regularly use Calibre (for about 10 years) and the related ebook reader/editor. I manage a library with over 40,000 ebooks. Someone suggested that Calibre portable has previewer capability and I'm skeptical that it does. The installed desktop version does not. So I downloaded the portable application to check.

Installed in Windows 10 and runs admirably but alas, it does not provide previewer in the OS. Same as the desktop version does not. Now, within the application, it does everything including thumbnails of the ebook covers, reading and editing of all manner of ebooks as epub, mobi, etc. and provides tons of conversions from and to epub, pdf, docx, etc. Its amazingly capable.
I guess I stirred some up about my 'absolutely no previewer' because others reminded me of SumatraPDF. I tried that some time ago and found it not so useful. I can't recall now just why but it probably didn't work without a hack, I'm not sure.

In my subsequent post above, I correctly attributed the thumbnails, hover box and preview to Dark Thumbs. It's actually kind of cool for zips also which contain jpg files. You'll have thumbnails, hover box and preview for the jpg inside the zip file.

Yes, Dark Thumbs is a nice add-on for thumbnails of epub and archive files
which works in all tools I have
Explorer, Everything, Total Commander, Free Commander, XYplorer

If you have a book viewer / reader like Calibre Portable, you'll have thumbnails, MDBU, hover box, and have preview for epub, mob, etc.
So that works out of the box now with the current beta?
Are there any more extensions I should add to the factory defaults?

In Preview Formats under Office files, I have epub and mobi checked and it has a Calibre's icon (even though it's portable, Calibre is associated with these files). As I mentioned in the above posts, it's Dark Thumbs which is providing thumbnails, Hover box, MDBU and Preview. Though when I text get("previewhandler", "mobi"); or epub, I get no preview handler installed.
epub, mobi, and zip are also listed under Category: Preview as Thumbnails for Preview Formats. I'm also getting no handler for text get("ThumbnailProvider", "epub"); or mobi

Good it works. The ImageFactory is a black magic blackbox, if it does what you want, you don't ask questions.
