Tweaks are user defined settings within XY INI that have to be modifed directly without a fancy GUI like the Config panel...there are a number of them already...see the wiki at

I take it that currently there is no tweak for aforementioned wish otherwise it would have been suggested already. Also, only allowing something that's easily available through GUI in WE in XYplorer through a tweak isn't cool in my book, people should feel at home in XY if we want them to abandon WE

Doesn't mean XY has to implement all the options WE does, or allow the same thing (the same way). We're not trying to do another WE here, thank Goodness!

Well, there are some things that have been implemented first via a tweak as it's the easiest to do, and then moved to Config later, so just because it starts as a tweak doesn't mean it's permanently one...and other tweaks are for options that are either minimally used or obscure so cluttering up the GUI with them doesn't make sense.
And as to jacky comments: Any potential XY user would likely want any WE replacement to do what WE does as a starting point (though maybe in an alternative manner), so I somewhat disagree with jacky here.

Absolutely agree with you there mate! Doesn't mean that XY must clone WE, but at least it should be mimicking the choices and the settings WE gives to people, even if it's not by default.

for what it's worth: i don't think that it would be a good idea to include an option just because WE has it. Especially such weird settings like displaying incomplete filenames or preventing the user from specifying a valid filename (my point of view).
Adding every of those "features" would be the first step to bloat. (but maybe i'm exaggerating here...)

Well, I beg to differ. I think people who are trying to move on from WE should feel right at home with XYplorer. Taking the "feel right at home" expression literally, one would assume that it means that a person is present in familiar surroundings. For this to be the case with XY, it needs to offer that similarity. Now we're all different and as such degree of this desired similarity would vary from person to person. Let's not forget that such option was integrated in WE not to make it bloaty. However, WE is flawed and imperfect in many aspects as such people seek alternatives such as XYplorer. I very much doubt that a person would desire to abandon WE just because it offers the option to hide extensions for known file types.
Why? Because it's not a make or break kind of thing. There's a choice, hide or show, customize to your liking. Speak of the devil, that's exactly what makes XYplorer so great: it offers a great deal more that WE does. Does it make it bloaty because some people may think the options and configs are excessive? Most certainly not. XYplorer is also great because it works "out of the box". Take it and use it. If you're a power user or someone who desires certain flexibility when it comes to file management then you're in luck because that's possible too.
I am not suggesting that every single feature of WE should be ported over, but if there's a demand and a justification and it's a feature that would offer people choice of whether to use it or not then I really don't see the harm.

Yeah, let's agree on that one. And there's simply no justification to prevent people from giving perfectly valid filenames to their files (or folders). That "limitation" from WE is just silly, XY doesn't need to mimic it.
Listen, start notepad (another Windows app made by MS), click Save As, chose "All Files" and type ".toto" as filename, and you got yourself a file named ".toto" And that's alright, there's nothing wrong with this, at all, the fact that WE refuses to do is just stupid.
About hiding the extension, I can't see why anyone serious with file management would want that one, but that's me; I guess that it could make sense IF column Ext is shown, since in that case it doesn't really hide the extension, but "moves" it to a separate column... but Don will have the final word on that one, anyways.

Yep, and it's time to speak now before more precious brain time is wasted. I'm with jacky & Pagat. Further posting is useless.

And I think it's stupid not to give a file a base name unless it's a system requirement (.htaccess). How is one supposed to differentiate between 2 files called .txt that are in side by side folders? Just because people are able to do things doesn't mean they make a great deal of sense. However, that's personal and that's why having a choice is good.

Well I think that if people know what the file by name then they know what type of file it is and the extension it has. So to the contrary of your statement, people who are serious about file management would already know what kind of file it will be and shouldn't have to be told. Also, it's quite redundant because you sort by file type, not extension so it doesn't come into play in any way

So I've just upgraded to 7.40 and I can see that Ext column could be added. Now then, does that mean we can now remove extensions from being displayed?

But what's the point of having a column to show extensions if they will still be displayed after base name?
Edit: yes, one can say that having Ext column would allow sorting by such criteria but then what's the point of Type column?
