Other idea: the "drives" toolbar button will goto mycomputer on left-click and pop the drives menu on right click!?
I never use this button as I have all set up in the catalog.

If the name was changed from drives to drives & virtual

(I know virtual is not best name but I don't know the collective term)

then Left Click reveals a list of drives followed by list of virtual thingies

That was exactly my plan. But now I think, TheQuerty's original idea (add it to the top of the menu + separator) is cooler.

It was such a simple wish originally and then you went and wanted to give the button a default action... :P

I really don't see the advantage of the whole thing. Just right-click on the tree and the SPECIAL SYSTEM FOLDERS list opens. The modified button has no advantage at all, you need exactly the same number of mouse clicks to arrive at MY COMPUTER.

All you achieve is to spoil the button. It is called "Drives", so there should be no MY COMPUTER on the list. Xplorer2 and all the other file managers I know have it this way because it is logical and consistent. What you get here is just a big mess.

When I choose Go > Drives will there also be MY COMPUTER on the list?

With the same logic you could just take the whole SPECIAL SYSTEM FOLDERS list as it now exists and add it to the top of the original DRIVES list. You surely think that I magnify this problem but for me the whole action contradicts your beloved ZEN thing.

WOW. The mini wish is blowing up like a super nova. Will it be the next DP?

I think I let you users do the fighting and come back in a week or so... hihi.

PS: sanchop, welcome to the club! :D

You're making the assumption that I have the tree visible at all times. I don't, and thus using that or the catalog are not useful for me. There's other ways for me to do this, but including a menu item on the drives menu would increase my (and I believe others) productivity with minimal disruption to anyone else.

Within Windows Explorer and on the Start Menu, you access drives through My Computer. If you want a list of drives you go to My Computer. As I've stated it's the parent to the drives, and presumably that is why Don even includes it on the Breadcrumb menu.

Thus, it makes perfect sense for it to be included in this menu. It's akin to an item for "List All".

And this is XYplorer not all those other file managers, I don't use those file managers for a reason.

I can't think how the logic I'm applying to My Computer can be twisted to make a case for any of the other special system folders.

No other special system folder is a parent to any drives, it doesn't make any sense at all for them to be included, so that's a bit of a stretch to say it would make all of them acceptable.

Maybe it would be a good idea to make this an INI tweak (as you did with some controversial feature requests in the past, Don). This way everybody could choose: a traditional "Drives" button menu or a modified one.

Sounds like a possible solution to this 'dispute'! The modified would be as mentioned above as top-of-menu + separator.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Well, I just added it. Now everybody can get the taste and react. I personally like it.

EDIT: I think the whole top tree level nodes should be added, so Desktop, MyDocs, and Network as well. Okay? Then we call it "Drives & Co." ... :)

Thank you Don! It's exactly what I had been thinking. :)

I don't really use those other items, so I'm going to reserve judgment beyond saying I'm not opposed to adding them.

Though I think "Drives & Co." could use some work... :P

What about a new button called "MyComputer", having...

MyComputer
-
Desktop
MyDocs
-
drives
...
-
nethood

... and reversing the drives button to what it was before?

Yes, I like your idea. The minimalists can choose the "Drives" button and all who need a little bit more can choose the "MyComputer" button. So everybody can have what she/he wants without need to add a second button.

But maybe this would be overkill. TheQwerty seems to be happy with the modified "Drives" button, sanchop will be happy if it is only an INI tweak and most users perhaps will just use right-clicking the tree, a catalog entry, etc.

 I was just thinking....So now...let me get this correctly...we are doing all this effort just to avoid one click and a tiny bit of mouse movement? Or what...??
Because...aren't most of these options available via Favorites on MenuBar?
I can click/tap on it, move down and thru 'Special System Folders' and get to My Comp, Desktop, My Docs, etc...so exactly how much effort does this take that having it on a TB icon would relieve?
After all, the menubar items are always there for all users, and don't take any more room on TB...
Come on...let's reserve TB functions for better things! :P
Or do some users go to "My Computer" that often? :?

Don, do whatever you please.

All I ever wanted when I made the initial post was a single toolbar button with drives and My Computer on it.

If you want to make that a new button that's fine.
If you don't like the idea of having two buttons that are so closely duplicated, that's fine too, I'd readily agree.

Clearly I'm alone in thinking such a button is natural and logical, and that's fine, I admit defeat.

This wish wasn't worth a page of posts and it certainly isn't worth two, so I'm done with it. I'll be fine with whatever decision you make, even if it is to revert it back.

I like the new change.

I even added the button to the toolbar now :)
