Since you can reproduce it with older XY versions, it's clear that XY is not the (only) culprit. Something changed in your system.
But this still leaves the question why the previews work again after a restart of XY without changing anything else, i.e. all the other apps are still running, no files have been closed, no RAM has been freed apart from closing XY???

As said before, it's my work computer playing up and sure there have been several update installations (primarily MS) in the past couple months, but I keep my home system up to date as well and haven't had that problem there so far.

XY has no memory leaks (easy to check with TaskManager). You might compare the versions of GDIplus on both systems.
