Just now noticed the Application Load Time under Startup & Exit. 3.9 seconds. Drat DcomLoader! ;-(

I had some similar problem with Firefox and Thunderbird starting up *really* slow. I reinstalled Vista (when I got my new disks) and after reinstalling Zonealarm the problem has gone away. I thought at the time that it was ZA config thing where ZA was trying to see if it was ok to run them.
I'm not suggesting that you reinstall Vista, but it might be worth while checking network/firewall settings.
Something to think about anyway...

Thanks for the reply, John. I have looked at all network settings and tried turning the firewall off completely. Only 2 apps seem to have this issue - XY and IE. IE opens ok, but when I click on that first URL, it's about the same lengh of time as XYs opening before it finds it. Subsequent URLs open normally. And during these delays (both XY and IE), it's always DcomLaunch that is chewing up the processor cycles and the clock.
