I guess it could be read as either "Custom Folder"+"Settings" or "Custom"+"Folder Settings", and they could mean two slightly different things as Peter says, but that's the type of thing that a one-sentence description in Help/docs/wiki/etc would clarify easily...and once you know what it means, you'll never ask the question again, so for that first and one-time only confusion, I think the 'power' of Custom would be better than the alternative, as others stated before.

I agree with your point, thats why I opted for Folder specific settings (settings that are specific for each folder). My 2 cents.

Good point... what says the English speaking man? Is it ambiguous/misleading?

The answer is easy.

Look at the existing Tools menu now.

"Customize Folder Settings" is clear, powerful and fits the current look and feel.

After looking for meanings of "custom" at leo.org I think that "Custom Folder Settings" maybe interpreted just as it was meant - but still I have some "Emotional Problems" with it...

I still prefer "Folder Specific Settings". Where's the problem with it?


BTW, the term we discuss is here is mostly needed for documentation, talk and promotion. Within XY it is not needed in this form.

There will be a command/button to "Save Folder [Display] Settings" (or so...), and a new item in List Management which will list the folders with saved/stored settings, so it will be called "Folders with Saved Settings..." or so. That's all, no other interface needed.

it seems that (a) "folder view settings" is the standard term for this, and (b) the word "custom" leads into a wrong direction (unique icons etc for individual folders).

My preference:
1) Folder specific settings (more so after Don pointed out the windows explorer terminology "folder view settings")
2) Customize folder settings
3) Custom folder settings

Is it just me who feels that MS help pages are really hard to read? More like, so poorly designed that I just don't want to read.

After reading the recent posts here, and Don's reminder of M$ usage, I'm going to switch and agree with "Folder Specific Settings", as that is most similar to Win Expl usage, and that the word custom has some other implications that we may not want here...ok?

I still believe that having this discussion was valuable, as we got a chance to understand various points of view, and the plus/minus of each one...that's definitely why I love XY so much...

i was quite happy with "folder specific settings" from the beginning. (as you can see in my signature )

"Folder Specific Settings" = programmer speak.

"Customize Folder Settings" = user-friendly speak.

"|=0ld3r $377!ng$" = leet speak.

And I do think that "Customize Folder Settings" needs to be on the Tools menu. It fits nicely with "Customize Toolbar", "Customize File Associations" and "Customize Keyboard Shortcuts"

Whatever it's called, it will be a nice feature to have.

I realize that this thread has gone a bit off-track but this comment got me wondering: I'd hoped that this could be handled somewhat like Templates, in that I could give a name to a particular setting config, and then apply that to desired folders...is that not the case?

So I could have, for example, a folder setting named "Music" that would be most applicable to that file type, and another named "Pix" that would be good for JPG's, etc...I'd still want ability to have unique un-named settings for some folders, and a default setting for all others, but for a number of them having a named setting would be so much better than how Win Expl handles it.! Plus it would reduce the number of entries that would need to be stored, I would suspect, as having the folder name under a template is quicker/easier than all the settings for that folder.

I don't see me talking about this. But okay, I see the use of it.

I think it would be useful to have an option that all subfolders have the same settings, so that one doesn't have to assign every single folder to a specific setting.
