This is just a wild guess because I don't understand the inner workings of Windows and have never encountered your stated issue, but you could try disabling Pre/Superfetch temporarily, it should be disabled on an SSD anyway but somehow maybe it is still enabled on your rig and causing issues?

I disabled SuperFetch service in services.msc and implemented the registry tweak described on the page you directed me to.

Makes no difference, unfortunately.

Given that the 100% utilisation of C: occurs when XYplorer is running and stops immediately it is closed, I don't really see much of a connection with SuperFetch/Prefetch. But I guess you know the inner workings of your own software and I don't.

FWIW, I renamed my XYplorer.ini and started XYplorer but it made no difference to the 100% disc utilisation.

If I am the only user who has reported this problem then I guess it must be something to do with my unique, but in every other way 100% rock solid Windows installation. Based on the 'evidence' in my screenshot from earlier today there is no doubt that the disc utilisation starts with XYplorer and finishes when I terminate XYplorer. Therefore I will greatly value your further insight on how to resolve this, thank you.

What if you run a copy of XYplorer.exe from another location? (Maybe there is some physcial problem with your disk.)

I moved (copied) the XYplorer folder from "C:\Program Files (x86)\XYplorer" to a folder on my G: (conventional HDD) drive and was amazed to see the problem had gone!

However, then I remembered that I run XYplorer in Admin mode but that the test on G: was in User mode. When I launched in Admin mode the 100% disc utilisation issue recurred.

When I launch from the original "C:\Program Files (x86)\XYplorer" location in User mode I don't get the issue.

Therefore, clearly the explanation is when XYplorer runs in Admin mode. In order to force XYplorer to run in Admin mode I had altered the 'Compatibility' tab (right-click XYplorer.exe / Properties) and checked 'Run this Program as an Administrator'. Unchecking this has apparently solved the issue.

If I would prefer to run in Admin mode, what is the correct way to do so, as clearly my way is causing the high disc utilisation issue?

Could it have to do with UAC? What if you turn off UAC for a minute?

Hi,

No idea. But the high disc utilisation was happening just when XYplorer was sitting there looking pretty. I was not using it.

If I can't run in Admin mode then I guess it's not the end of the world and my problem is hopefully resolved, permanently.

As a matter of interest, what is the recommended way of running XYplorer (only) in Admin mode (i.e. so I don't get the UAC prompts I get running it in User mode)?

Also, if you change the 'Compatibility' properties on the executable, like I had done, to run in Admin mode, do you get the same disc utilisation issue?

By creating and executing a task (via the task scheduler)

This is a simple registry entry that is set when doing that. The issue is somewhere else

Maybe there is some surveillance configured?

Open a cmd prompt with admin permission and execute this:

gpresult /Scope User /v

Show everything from "Resultant Set Of Policies for User" onwards

afterwards execute this:

Code: Select all

gpresult /Scope Computer /v

and show everything from "Resultant Set Of Policies for Computer " onwards
