I find it logically / interfacially (?) difficult to implement this additionally to the already existing options.

Maybe a blacklist (tweak) is the answer: A list of locations to be excluded from 'Show folder sizes'. Hmm?

Sure, that would certainly work for me.

Or, perhaps have a setting that the calculations can take no longer than n seconds?

Or, perhaps DON'T restart the calculations when the underlying directories change within a certain amount of time (or during calculations).
Sort of like, calculate once. Don't repeat the calculations constantly. The same problem occurs when you're copying files to a sub-directory. The show folder sizes routine runs for every file change and I have to use the "don't refresh directory" option (CTRL-R).

I'll think about the options...

Concerning your last point, untick this and no update should happen during file copies:
Configuration | Refresh, Icons, History | Auto-Refresh | Refresh during file operations

Actually that was a good point! I added re-entry block to the main calculation, something I should have done on day one.

The ideas are not so good IMO. I think the blacklist is the cleanest way. But I will sleep over it...
