Try a machine restart - I was having this same problem in WinXP, but it's gone now after I restarted my machine because Windows Update said I had to.

That sounds crazy and I'll be annoyed if that works. The aliases work fine in Explorer and the console. I'll have to reboot in a bit; I have to wait for some stuff to finish.

[Edit] Belatedly realized my processing stuff was running in a remote desktop session so I was able to reboot now after all. So, color me annoyed. I don't get it but that works.

Although new variables that I create still exhibit the same behavior: they work in Explorer and the console but XYplorer doesn't recognize that it's a variable.
