Interesting, thanks! If anybody tries this I'd very much like to know whether it worked!
I also tried to revert to a standard winodws theme as you suggested and wiped the icons cache manually but still get the blank icons.
see new screenshots below (left is XYPlorer, right is win Explorer showing correct icons.). note that I'm usin Win 7 x64 (not win 8.1)
