So what? I never mentioned libraries in the description of Paper Folders.

I humbly present my idea that paper folders are lacking some integration.
Paperfolders created from dynamic lists, such as a folder content, search results etc, turn into a static list.
There should be a way to update papers created this way.
PeterH's suggestion for a metadata section in the paper.txt can help here. The metadata will contain the source of the paper (search definition, source folder... basically whatever was in the AB while creating the PF) and clicking update will rerun/reopen the list (in background) and update the paper with their contents.

That's not the idea of it. But...

... the up-coming LoadList command will make it easier for you to script something like that.

Don, a small bug:

If a filename for a paper folder contains a dot it won't be found if using goto paper:<that file>

E.g.:
<xydata>\Paper\a.b.txt
goto "paper:a.b";

-> error message

Another small issue: I loaded a CTB with #770; (to assign your Catalog paper script to the right-click) and then activated "Fire click on mousedown" - which it does, but then releasing the mouse won't trigger the commands, it takes another click to do so.

Yet another one: open a Paper Folder, then choose Save As... or Save Copy As... . Pressing cancel in the save dialog gives an empty error.

2. Because that would need extra commands.
3. Use Copy To.
1. Isn't it just safer to have it open in a new tab?
2. I understand that and isn't the "Wishes" section meant for people to ask for new stuff? :?
3. That's less intuitive and less user-friendly.
4. And just to bounce off what PeterH and Sammay said, if they (PFs) are not live/dynamic (in a sense that if I add folder/file to drive X: and there is a PF with that drive, it should auto-update), they should be.

Wishlist items;
Sub Folders with items within the "Paper" folder are not listed in the popout list under "Paper >", would be nice!

Ability to lock/prevent the removal of items from the list.
i.e. on a portable installation items may not always be available due to run location e.g. using network devices that are not always on, running from a different machine.

Perhaps have a clean up feature to remove unwanted/orphan items in the Paper Folder file for end user to action.
You could even have Stats: 3 items unavailable, click here to clean this paper folder now

Excellent new feature. Just trying to work out how best to use it..

Agreed, I appreciate that PFs are meant as a unique spin on virtual folders. That being said, the way they should work is to take what's possible in Libraries and add extra. This is so that those users who want to use Libraries' core functionality with respect to content aggregation from multiple locations and content's dynamic nature can achieve this without having to go to Explorer. After all, Libraries were voted the 2nd most wanted feature after XYcopy in a poll back in 2010.

Hi Don,

just my first impressions.

The more I think about it, the more I'm sure that my "problem" is just the name (partly combined with the history of the wish).

From the beta notes, I think the PF concept is perfectly fine, sound absolutely cool and are a welcome addition for me. As far as I've undestood the concept they are a sort of persistent meta collections (or meta lists) spanned over the file system. For me this is especially welcome, because I don't use tagging so far (reason: for everything I consider worth the tag effort I prefer specialized tools just like MusicBee) and now have an alternative way to have some "sticky lists". :appl: :beer:
Suggestion/question: Is there a way to make an existing PF kind of "the current PF" to which I quickly could add a selected file system item using a keyboard shortcut (e.g. <ctrl>+<+>) or a context menue command?

Now coming back to the name. When reading about "virtual folders" I'm somewhat spoiled by my long settled expectations because - all the eye candy aside - I indeed expect them to be
- an easy approach to what could already be achieved with all kind of links/shortcuts or even branch views -> a physical non-existing basket looking like a folder in which I can aggregate other virtual/physical items simply (for instance, with XY I avoid using symbolic links as much as I can because I always get the message about a missing credentials for SL-creation once I paste a folder as Symbolic Link)
- dynamic structures
Hence I think the "folder" aspect could be revisited, maybe with PF 2.0.

Cheers,
Filehero

Yup, thanks. Fix comes.

I don't think this this is possible. I had to remove the possibility to right-click-trigger menus for other reasons.
