I'd really prefer the 2 toggles. Easier for the brain IMO, and better for KS.

Got it:
Catalog Vertical
Catalog First

Ok - but how would that handle those who wanted Cat on right side of list? So that they could have Tree/List/Cat? A third option would be needed for that...
That would allow for above plus:
Tree/Cat/List
Cat/Tree/List
Cat/List/Tree
List/Tree/Cat
List/Cat/Tree
And that choice would thus leave no option unavailable as to horizontal options.

Uhm, that's not planned.

Ok - but I suspect Filehero and maybe others (Huidong via that other thread) will be disapointed...as it seems he asked for that on first page of thread...and on wide screen, i could envision having list in middle as mouse distance efficient to reach either tree or cat.

Excactly.
On the left of list pane: tree for gros orientation/navigation.
On the right of list pane (where my mouse pointer resides most of the time near to the list pane scrollbars): Catalog with favorites etc. for quick jumps.
Is it a philosophical/aesthetical thingie or rather technical restrictions/limitations, Don?
Cheers,
Filehero

No, I just never thought of this (overlooked it in your other mail). One day I will add it, but not now. This stuff is a lot of work -- due to some stupid decisions made many years ago. I should rewrite the whole layout thing, but that would be even more work

Don, any possibility of Auto-hide. This can be immensely useful for Catalog.

Same here. Was hoping for a much more versatile solution.

When it comes to that, would you please consider this related wish of mine:

This would give Dual Pane workflows a real boost. Catalog columns are narrow enough to fit 2 of them on a wide screen. It also looks much nicer to have both sides mirror each other, not to mention the effortless navigation, less mouse travel, etc.
I'll provide screenshots and other pointers if you want me to

Looks like there was a misunderstanding. So if something like "Tree | Cat | List" or "Cat | Tree | List" is not interesting I'll stop this thing. It's too much work anyway.

I'll take whatever I get. Unless this is an either-or question: Small version now vs full-fledged solution later. In which I opt for the the later.

Docking the cat-column outside the monitor edge, similar to what ScreenCapturs and Prog Launchers do - when you move the mouse to that edge, the column or bar slides in.

Just what I think: Auto-hide sounds great - at least for catalog!
I use it for Win-taskbar and am glad about the additional usable space!
But: if also able for tree: control tree and catalog separately!
By the way: on 'catalog below tree' it would be fine to see only tree - and show catalog on 'cursor on lower edge of tree'

Yes, like Stef123 and PeterH mentioned.
With Catalog, when you are not interacting with it, is like space occupier. And when you are interacting with it, its a mind blowing feature. With the numerous amount of times, I interact with the catalog, enabling and disabling it is too tedious. Auto-hiding the catalog after the mouse is moved from the Catalog area will be amazing.
