Ok. Cool.

So is it really just icon overlay that's slowing things down so much? I turned off all the other "slow" options.

I don't suppose there's a way to cache the column widths and only update if something's changed? Or has this been discussed before/go against some kinda grain I'm not aware of?

P.S. I'm back from holiday :)

Welcome back from holiday! :)

Here's another idea: autosize only the Name column (and, in SR, maybe the Path column)! Because: isn't that the only column you really want to be autosized?? Would speed it up immensely...

Size can also be important.

Actually, in my case, no! On the rare occasion I used it, it was mainly due to size column....because I had forgotten about the ability to do it just for that field
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Just to make sure: I'm only talking about the setting in menu View|List Style. Any other way to autosize columns will still autosize them all.

Ok...so I'm presuming that "label" would then change to something like "Autosize Name/Path Now"?

No, but to View|List Style|"Autosize Name Columns".

As I live with "Autosize Columns" on (probably the main reason I chose XY in the first place out of interest - save about a bazillion ^NumPadPlus presses a day...) this would be a really cool modification. Speed is fine already most of the time, but on directories with larger numbers of files, things can get a little sluggish.

How aboue having two options (or three?):

1.) Autosize Name Column
2.) Autosize Name and Size Column2
3.) Autosize Size Column [*seems to make sense for completeness, but I can't really see a reason why someone would use just this option...*]

And yes, manually autosizing columns makes sense, to me, to autosize everything. Actually, thinking about it, there's no reason you can't have a 4th option which is what you already have perhaps with the warning that it may be slower...

4.) Autosize All Columns (slower)

Before we spill out new options let's wait a second:
In the next BETA you'll experience some mind-blowing speed improvements concerning autosize columns!!! :D

I'm replying to j_c_hallgren above - I want to do the same thing. I need a report that shows me number of files contained in a folder, or a subfolder. I basically want to find folders containing large numbers of files that I may have generated during testing, so I can clean them up.

Anyone found a good way to report on number of files per folder?

Well then, I'll reply back! :) Not sure of a XY solution right now, so I'll point you to some other helpful things:
Two of the tools that I use to help me keep things clean are a freeware Java app called JDiskReport at http://www.jgoodies.com/freeware/jdiskreport/index.html and freeware TreeSize at http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtml

I've used both of these for quite a while and never had any issues with either...the JDisk Rpt lets me find the largest file quite easily...via it, I found a file that I didn't know of that was in my cache folder and taking multi-MB of space!
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
