Even I have a similar setup.

The issue arises here. I download lots of images and move them to different folders and rename them. As soon as I move them to the destination folder, XY creates a thumbnail for it and I rename it.

So, I may be ending up with thumbs for non-existent files.

This was the issue I was trying to explain. Outlook has a similar issue, where when you delete an email from a pst, it doesn't reduce the pst size unless it is compressed.

Though Don would be the only person to comment how xy will handle movement and renaming of files. I certainly wouldn't mind deleting the cache from my download folder. However; if non-existent thumbs aren't purged, purging may be of no use.

I do often purge the thumbnails like when I have got a new fav thumbnail size and don't plan to use the earlier one again or I have done a massive resorting. Usually just before I plan to backup.

I do something similar. All my photos are in subfolders under of my "G:\Pictures" and all my wallpaper are located in sub-folders under "G:\Wallpaper" (e.g., 1920x1080, 1920x1200, 1600x1200) and the various sub categories (e.g., Ireland, Germany, Italy, Australia, Castles) are located with identical names under each of the size or aspect ratio folders.

I realize based on what you're saying nerdweed that deleting old and obsolete folder referrals would only be part of the Thumbnail Clean-up job, but I suppose it's better than nothing. Like you, I'm updating photos and renaming files quite often especially when I crop new photos to a new aspect ratio though I usually do that in a script that will automatically refresh the thumbnail high quality so it works rather seamlessly. As you said, these thumbnail "dat2" and "dbit" files are loaded with obsolete information taking up some un-necessary file space especially when you temporarily use a thumbnail size you wouldn't normally use. I do try to do some of the work and renaming of files before there in their final destination/folder.

Marco, I did just what you said, "edit XYThumbs.txt by removing the lines about those subfolders and I delete the corresponding dat2/dbits files" and everything does work smoothly, but as soon as you mess with the "XYthumbs.txt" file, it refreshes and starts over new unfortunately. So, the valuable information that you could use in a script for all those unwanted or obsolete folders (e.g., on a flash drive) are gone. The thumb files themselves are still there of course, its just that the folder|thumb size|hash info inside XYthumbs.txt is gone since it refreshed. Like I mentioned above though, the folder and thumbsize is contained in the beginning of the dat2 file. If we could extract that along with the hash in the file name we could use it in a script to clean-up.
