Even I have a similar setup.
The issue arises here. I download lots of images and move them to different folders and rename them. As soon as I move them to the destination folder, XY creates a thumbnail for it and I rename it.
So, I may be ending up with thumbs for non-existent files.

This was the issue I was trying to explain. Outlook has a similar issue, where when you delete an email from a pst, it doesn't reduce the pst size unless it is compressed.
Though Don would be the only person to comment how xy will handle movement and renaming of files. I certainly wouldn't mind deleting the cache from my download folder. However; if non-existent thumbs aren't purged, purging may be of no use.
I do often purge the thumbnails like when I have got a new fav thumbnail size and don't plan to use the earlier one again or I have done a massive resorting. Usually just before I plan to backup.
