Possibly...but which brings up the question of where/how will we be able to adjust settings (as in 'Edit FV panel') for a given FV without being actually
in that folder? That's a feature that I'm sure this will come later, as will named entries, but just wondering...
jacky wrote:- "Show line number column" : bad wording here, because it looks like we need to check that option to show the column, and that's not the case (right?). It should read more "Line number column visibility" or something I think...
Agreed...maybe "Line nbr column visibility" would be enough to keep captions similar lengths.
jacky wrote:- Other columns options : Shouldn't there be an "s" at column, since it applies to all (data) columns ?
I don't agree here...there is no selection of which column that it applies to, unlike View|Columns, so the non-plural is fine.

Yeah, that's a good question. But since the command exists to trigger LM, there should be an entry there, even if such a way to edit FVs doesn't come soon. Because I'm sure many people (or at least me

), when they need to do such, well, list management, go look under LM, not in the feature the list belongs to...

Well, that was a question, you're then English-speaking guy here
It's just I felt that seeing "Column visibility" one could wonder, but which column are we talking about here ? Whereas "Columns visibility" meant it'll remember all columns visibility, those which are and those which aren't, and that's exactly what this does!
You say there is no selection here, but in a way there is, since it remembers the selection of which columns to show (and/or their widths/pos)
Of course, I might be wrong here...

A bug I think, difficult to reproduce but the following seems to do it though I think the bug is not necessarily always due to this pattern.
Code: Select all
Set up a folder as in thumbnail view and save CFV ( F) all works as expected
I exited the program and on reload it was as before.
Now select My Documents folder set select Manage Folder Views and
select editor mode followed by list mode and OK then exit program
On re-load the previous CFV's are gone and Mangae Folder views option is greyed out.

Yes, but my worst subject in school was....English!

If you want plural form, then you'd need to reverse word order as in "Visibility of Columns"...but given that there is no sub-menu or sub-options to 'Column Visibility', it is presumed to mean any/all column(s) not otherwise specified, so line nbr is thus excluded.

Oh yes! I have to disable editor mode for FVS! I cannot work here.

Another oddity, well to me at least!
Code: Select all
Save a folder view (F) and then go to edit and select auto save changes and OK
Next select edit again and all applied settings are removed.
I am struggling with auto save changes as to its purpose so would appreciate a simple explanation of why it is there and fro what purpose

1. I left this one for later. I also left "
Styles" (IMAGES, MUSIC) for later.
For me right now, the main appeal of this new feature is its ultimate simplicity and fool-proof reliability. Since years you can see countless of use group postings daily where people complain about FVS not working as expected in Windows. XY got this working now.
2. I called it "Line number visibility", since, as Ivan rightly observed

, Line number is not a column but a list property.

No, I decided that it would be bloat to add it there.

Apart from that I like to have FVS as a compact little bundle in one place. I think that's user-friendly.
jacky wrote:- Best Match Algorithm : interesting idea, I wonder if this might not please everyone though. Especially the "Pattern Match > Full Match Including Subs" part, as it means a very general pattern "e.g. D:\*" would take over a FV for "D:\Folder" with subs when in D:\Folder\Sub Wouldn't you think the Full Match Including Subs should win in this case ?
Of course, it's probably more likely that the pattern is "*\images" so I see your point

Yes, there surely will be situations where it turns out to be only 99% perfect. But I'll wait for
real users to report them, not spoilt BETA-testers that are conditioned to think like a programmer.

Fine with me!

And I realize this is a work in progress, so just wanted to get some ideas of what is planned, what makes up phase 1, 2, 3, etc. and what terminology you've tenatively picked for some of these other enhancements. Thanks!
Addendum:

That's more likely where I might look for the "Styles" feature is under Tools|LM, but that may not be correct place either.

Yes, exactly! Unless it's buggy.

WOW, this is a bug for sure!

Just a little addendum to the name crisis.
I finally settled my soul on
Folder View Settings (FVS) for the feature name and also for the menu caption, although it's semantically
gaga. When I cannot sleep I explain it to myself like this: "Folder View Settings (FVS) is the commonly used label for a feature that allows you to associate certain folders with certain view settings. It should really be called "Save and Automatically Restore Folder-Specific View Settings" but that wouldn't look good in a menu.
BTW, I like my TB icon! The
F not only stands for
Folder but, being cold-blue, also for
Freeze, and when I press this button I think to myself: Stay as you are, sweet folder! Don't move a pixel!
FREEZE!

Ok, so I was doing something that I shouldn't

..but still...the way XY presented it was not the most pretty...I was looking at "fvs.dat" via Raw View and then tried to do a "Save FVS"... we know file is obviously in use at that time but initially get this
Code: Select all
Error 70 (00000046)
Desc Permission denied
Dll 0
Proc dumpFSS to: C:\PROGRA~1\XYplorer\fvs.dat
Source XYplorer
XY ver 7.40.0016
OS Win2K (Service Pack 4)
Date 8/11/2008 2:43:44 PM
before I got the "Save Settings failed" box...maybe a better handling of this might be in order, if possible?

Well, I think I disagree here. Because it uses LM anyways (even if the caption of the window tries to hide it) and people are likely to see that, obviously. So they'll probably look in LM when the need to access this list.
And it's one of the appeal of that menu (Tools|LM) IMO, that when you need to manage one of the many lists in XY, you don't need to bother remember where that feature is located, just head to LM!
A quick example: I'm sure many assume that when using this new feature, people will automatically have the TB icon on their TB. That might not be the case, and I could see many - once their FVs will be set & correctly working - simply drop the TB icon (if they had it in the first place).
Then, I'm pretty sure the first place to look for the list of FVs defined will be Tools|LM[FVS rather that View|FVS|Manage FV, especially when it's been weeks/months you haven't touched that feature and don't remember where it is and what it's called...

Okay, it uses the LM GUI, but only because I faked it to be a simply List which it is not! It's a data structure for which LM is not made. Plus, most LM buttons are disabled. It is more likely that in a later stage I write a proper interface just for managing FVs. At the moment you want to edit FVs that are not currently active this will be needed anyway.
