I think a lot gets decided here! Only that the decisions are very short-lived...graham wrote:admin wrote:.Yes I can accept that - whilst I think it is best to get a good name representative of the feature as has been demonstrated it is probably impossible to get a prefect name - once backed up by the wiki and help the use and terminology will fit even if not ideal.What about "Folder Specific Views"?
Reminds me of committee meetings where nothing gets decided!

While I think "Custom Folder Views" could work ok from a marketing view and also from a technical view, I believe it would still need to be cross-referenced/documented as "Folder View Settings" in help/web/wiki to make transition easier and so that people will find it either way.

"find a god work for it"...jacky wrote:Except Views are Details, Thumb, List, etc (and this is more than just that.)admin wrote:Let's forget marketing for a while and find a god work for it. (Folder Specific Settings does not work for reasons described earlier in this thread). What about "Folder Specific Views"?
Yeah, View/View... but being under the View menu it should be clear to mean View and not View.
Would work for me personally, too, but TheQwerty is right unfortunately: I just saw that in Windows official lingo "Custom Folders" refers to when you put custom icons or backgrounds to folders -- something that's not meant here.jacky wrote:Cause you're going with Folder Views = Views. If if were to say that a "folder view" is a combination of View (which usually doesn't relate to a folder (but a tab) so there's no reason to call it folder view), sort order, columns order/visibility, etcTheQwerty wrote:Custom or User Folder View says you can create a custom view for a folder aside from the details, list, thumbnails, etc.
Then, "Custom Folder Views" works. At least I feel that way...
For me, "Folder Specific Views" is still god, uh good.

Sure, I will do that term-dropping and mention "Folder View Settings".j_c_hallgren wrote:While I think "Custom Folder Views" could work ok from a marketing view and also from a technical view, I believe it would still need to be cross-referenced/documented as "Folder View Settings" in help/web/wiki to make transition easier and so that people will find it either way.
Ok+-? That's about more or less middle okay? Since List Management also uses Delete, I will go for Delete then.j_c_hallgren wrote:Clear? No! Delete? Yes! Remove? Ok+-jacky wrote:I don't really agree. But "Custom Folders" != "Custom Folder Views" so...just because Windows uses two of the three words doesn't mean it's the same thing.admin wrote:Would work for me personally, too, but TheQwerty is right unfortunately: I just saw that in Windows official lingo "Custom Folders" refers to when you put custom icons or backgrounds to folders -- something that's not meant here.

Hummm...as described before, it seems quite uncommon for one...and then it implies (in one way) that view is specific to just that folder when it could be common to various folders based on wildcarding...but also, FSV as you gave it has "Views" as plural, which isn't correct, right? While FVS is plural which is correct, as it is a number of settings.admin wrote:But why not FSV???

Yeah well, there's a menu called View|Current Tab|Views so...admin wrote:Yeah, View/View... but being under the View menu it should be clear to mean View and not View.![]()
Also, you're assuming one situation only there. But we will be talking about this thing many other places, like help or here in the forums. And them, if Views means either one thing or the other depending on the context, it might not be ideal.
Yeah, but here Custom Folder Views refer to the way some (specific) folders are "viewed", that includes the View but not only, kinda like what we have here, no?admin wrote:See here where even "Custom Folder Views" is used: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr ... 27004.aspx

Jacky brings up a good point...for that issue, I'd now (thread diversion slightly) wonder if that second "Views" should be another term, like "layout" or "format" or similar...having the same word used in various places for slightly different things makes helping here sometimes difficult, as well as searching for correct answer.jacky wrote:Yeah well, there's a menu called View|Current Tab|Views so...

No, I think it should stay like that. It's been like for for a while, it's the standard name for such things, and I don't think there's really much confusion between the menu View and the different Views.j_c_hallgren wrote:Jacky brings up a good point...for that issue, I'd now (thread diversion slightly) wonder if that second "Views" should be another term, like "layout" or "format" or similar...
I don't think it's like "Folder Specific Views", which sounds like Views (Details, List, etc) assigned to specific folders, and since it would do that (only that's not all it does) it then could be confusing, I think.

Tonight while attending a jazz concert at church, I was thinking about this topic...and...wondered if these type of situations have been addressed yet or will be:
1) When a folder that has FVS active gets modified by rename/move, what happens to the view? Given that FVS doesn't put any control file in the folder itself, a rename or move of the folder would seem to thus disconnect the FVS. How is this handled?
2) When a folder with FVS is deleted, does the FVS get left behind and thus become excess junk in the DAT, presuming it's not a shared FVS?
Now if a user has named the FVS as a template style item, like IMAGES, removing all the applicable folders shouldn't cause the FVS to be deleted, but if it's an unnamed FVS tied to one folder, deleting that folder might need to be linked to a prompt to clean-up the FVS item.
3) When a folder with FVS gets moved to a subfolder of another path that has its own FVS that applies to those subfolders, does the original FVS get left behind and thus obsoleted with no clean-up? Or how might this best be handled? It would seem that it could go multiple ways.
These are just a few combinations that I though of while band was taking a break...

Not handled. As long as these issues only appear in Jazz concert breaks it's okay.j_c_hallgren wrote:Tonight while attending a jazz concert at church, I was thinking about this topic...and...wondered if these type of situations have been addressed yet or will be:

Quick remarks/questions as I just installed the new beta :
- Seems you forgot to add an entry "Folder View Settings" under Tools|LM ?
- "Show line number column" : bad wording here, because it looks like we need to check that option to show the column, and that's not the case (right?). It should read more "Line number column visibility" or something I think...
- Other columns options : Shouldn't there be an "s" at column, since it applies to all (data) columns ?
<pita>
- Best Match Algorithm : interesting idea, I wonder if this might not please everyone though. Especially the "Pattern Match > Full Match Including Subs" part, as it means a very general pattern "e.g. D:\*" would take over a FV for "D:\Folder" with subs when in D:\Folder\Sub Wouldn't you think the Full Match Including Subs should win in this case ?
Of course, it's probably more likely that the pattern is "*\images\" so I see your point
</pita>
- Question about your notes regarding the default FV : does that means there's absolutely no point in setting up a default FV with auto-save changes, unless we specifically don't want all things remembered, only one/some (e.g. say only the View or Sort Order but NOT all of them) ??
