For us in USA, it could be mixed with marketing to "your route to better FM" or similar..."drive yourself to better drive management"..etc
True, but I hope our detractors don't use "Highway to hell".
Jokes aside, this shape definitely is making better use of space, as the plectrum is kind of narrow. I would go for somewhat wider shapes.

May be a shape of a folder? I just saw this icon and it nicely emphasizes portability. But darn, someone else uses it.

Since this discussion is apparently not quite exhausted, I hope I'm not out of place throwing my two-cents in.

I'm no designer, by a long chalk, but I just cobbled together a very simple 16x16 mock up. I am not at all suggesting THIS as a new icon, just an idea for a direction. The main emphasis here is the rounded shape with the cut-off corner which echoes the straight edge of the Y, as well as the X and Y mirroring one another. Colours and style are all, as I say, 'cobbled together'. It's got a slightly unusual shape without being unrecognisable, complicated - so it should scale up/down okay - or reminiscent of anything else (security shields?), but not so unusual as to be a million miles away from the current icon. You might even say it looked a little like some sort of filing card or ticket :D There's plenty of scope for colour schemes, or for different things to be done with the lettering and border, too.

Anyway, here it is (in its teeny tiny form): Image

I've really been enjoying following this conversation and couldn't help my brain ticking a little, too :) Keep it up guys.

Well, it could be said that XY is the "Highway from (WE) hell!"

Agree that, yes, the wider shape helps a lot.

Another thought, just a simple unique icon should do, instead of trying to include XY into the icon. Looking around, majority of apps have unique icons rather than abbreviation of their names.

I must say I quite like this as a starting point (more than anything else in this thread). Great work!

Although it looks a bit like a dead monkey... :)

OK, I'm lost my soul to the icons thing. I now think the green plectrum is too mysterious, and the route 66 thing too retro. And here's my new favorite! It's graphically clear without any enigma, kind of fun and positive, keeps some of the old logo colors, and shrinks well.

AntKnee wrote:I know this sounds petty, but it would be great if there were an option to use a different icon for the program. The reason is (at least for me) it is confusingly similar to the MS Outlook icon. They both use orange and white. I know, my eyes are going (from starring at the computer screen all day, no doubt) but there are many times where i click the wrong program. At least an option maybe or a way where i can change a file in the xyplorer directory with a different images/.ico would be great.

thanks!
Actually I just added a way to load the app icon from a stand-alone icon file of your choice. So now everybody can have his own favorite icon. :) Me included.

That one I also like...but...two minor things:
1) i think it's just a bit too much washed out by 'sunlight' in upper left, which shows more in smaller vers
2) Could it be available in forum blue instead of black? Black is just too dull/dark for me here...

1) i know what you mean, but i tried it live and it looks good like this, IMO the gloss works nicely. here's a shot from my taskbar:

2) I just added a way for you to make any icon available. :D

1) I wasn't saying it shouldn't have some gloss, just that it seemed to me a bit too much so that it bleached out part of the X

2) You've got a blue bar...mine is the pale/light gray so for me, blue is more approp than black...thus, even if we can use other icons, having a couple of color choices built in/avail would be good as we all don't have the skills/tools to tweak it, but we may well have very diff windows background colors.

The v21 looks good. But i am afraid it's too tiny since you didn't use the full hight of the square? Maybe stretch it some more?

The plectrum looks good and unique too in your last screen shot.

Admin> Actually I just added a way to load the app icon from a stand-alone icon file of your choice
Even better :D

Just an implementation idea for letting the user do quick testings which icon will fit best:
If exists <xypath>\XYplorer.ico
      use this icon

Testing for existence takes some msecs so I won't do it unconditionally. But if you use the tweak (next version) you can have the behavior you want:

Code: Select all

IconFile=XYplorer.ico

Yep, nice.
