I am asking if it would be possible to have the fields within the abused column appear individually with the other default columns in XY, such as Name, Ext, Size, Type, Modified, Created, etc., so that the information in the fields could be sorted visibly with all the other default columns?
The screenshot in my "pre-previous" post shows such a situation :) 10 custom columns, caption names 1-10. All sortable...

I've generated a list of "real" mockup data (by https://www.mockaroo.com/).

I'll let this image at it's real resolution to provide a better view (even if we normally want the people to size it down to 800 x <y>).

Display time: 2,5 seconds, sorting by a different column is instant. Quite usable...

This looks intriguing, highend
how do you edit those fields - by assigning values in the lower info bar like with regular tags?

It needs a special tagging script. It would look like this:

The downside - I assume - those fields are not easily set up by the average user, it takes advanced scripting skills to come up with such an html dialog or to change it. IOW, it's highly customized towards a special use case?

Mh, I wouldn't say that:

Neither, nor. The dialog window is self adjusting, depending on how many captions you've defined before

E.g: for 20 captions:

I guess that would be for people who need additional information stored with their files (portable) but independent from normal tags...

Wow - now I am getting REALLY impressed,
so you got it all built into your script, even the setup-dialogs - this seems like an entire db-feature tied in with XY. Can you apply a Visual Filter based on such columns?

No, visual filters don't work with tags, labels, comments, properties or extra columns

I've made a feature request a few days ago because of this:

Hi highend - It is SO tempting to enlist you to do this, but I think it may make more sense for me to simply stick with Calibre for now because it is so much easier to customize columns and to search by even the simplest of keywords, wildcards, etc. I will be investing in an external hard drive to automatically backup everything. I will keep the XY html scripting idea in mind though, trust me. I would like to see that feature built in to the program so that those of us who lack your scripting prowess could do it more independently.

I hesitate to reply to a two year old thread but I had thought about this sort of use before and this post might be useful for someone who searches on this later. I would say don't do it. In my case (as an individual rather than a company or institution) it would be an enormous project that would take far more effort than would ever be gained by the usefulness of the information. And there are other limitations as well.

But, if you really want to use XY for this, create a folder called something like "Offline" and create a text file or spreadsheet for either each media type (e.g. books) or each subject (e.g. family) and populate those files with your relevant info. You can even create a single spread sheet with tabs for each category.

I think that any collection management tool out there is essentially a customized database anyway and you could also implement your requirements with a general database tool. But using XY with tags and columns to do what you want would be result in an interface that is not that easy to use and a presentation that might make actually file management very cluttered as well.

I could be wrong, but that's my two cents on this.

May I ask if this script is available for downloading?
