Middle-Click Go Home

Post by Greylock »

Really loving XYplorer!

Please would you consider adding the option to 'go home' by middle-clicking on empty space (similar to Dbl-click to go up)? I know you can do this by middle-clicking on the tab but I think this would be faster still.

Many Thanks,

Hello and welcome to the forum!

What would you expect middle-clicking on empty space to do when no home has been set?
Should it do the same as the tab headers and just show a status bar message: tab has no home?

Thank you :)

That's a good question. I think the status bar message would be a good idea; it's unobtrusive but informative and would maintain consistency.

go home is too specific (only satisfy a few customers). I think a broader way would be "Middle click on empty area trigger script". But we already have "middle click on toolbar button trigger script". I think it's enough, no need to middle click on empty List.
I'm a casual coder using AHK language. All of my xys scripts:

The answer to this could be CEA... And CEA has been proposed as the answer to a variety of request for at least two years. I wonder if such (killer) feature will ever see the light...

Triggering scripts will come with Custom Event Actions (CEA), but that's much further down the road. Don might grant the wish of adding middle-click goes home, but with his head currently buried in Custom Columns, it's very unlikely he'd dive into CEA now.

Currently, it is rather wasteful to have middle-click on empty space do nothing, so I think this makes sense as a new INI tweak, CEA_ListMiddleClickOnWhite, with additional options similar to CEA_TreeRightClickOnWhite or CEA_ListRightClickOnWhite.

Also, it might be possible to achieve this with AutoHotkey, but I think detecting that a click was on empty space and not on an item might be easier said than done.

Please don't take offence if I disagree with this. One of the great things about XYplorer is that it usually has multiple ways of accomplishing a given task. This allows for a wide variety of users to select their preferred method without detrimentally affecting those who prefer a different way.

In this case, I don't think that adding a feature which would benefit some users, without detracting from the experience of those who wouldn't use it, would be a bad thing. I assume it would also be an easy function to implement and I think it would be quite intuitive to use.

My thinking exactly! Sorry I missed your reply while I was typing mine.

I'll give the INI tweak a try and hope that Don considers this worthy of inclusion in the Configuration screen in a future release :)

Well no point hoping it gets promoted to the GUI until Don sees fit to bless us with an INI tweak. ;)

Yes, CEA_ListMiddleClickOnWhite is the way to go. (Remind me when I got Win8 running productively -- <<< this is the global rule now for all threads).

Looks like CEA is emerging in a somewhat unusual way. Like mushrooms or so. Small tweaks come up all over the place. One day, when all the tweaks are complete I will add the UI for it. :)

Now you just never let us know when you are productive on Win8 and we'll have a deadlock. :P

Doh, that'll teach me to try to run before I've learned to walk!

Many thanks, Don. I'll definitely be pleased to see this (funny the small things which make us happy :))

I'm back in business. w8 is running nicely and I can code and compile my stuff. Load time 198 msecs! New record.

It will take some days though till the next beta (made from unused brandnew shiny bytes), because the new killer feature is a LOT of work... :cup: :cup: :cup: :cup: :cup: :cup:

Has this tweak ever been realized/implemented?
